Redesigning My Websites…Need Your Input

I think the title says it all. I am going to revamp my two main sites (I don't even want to think about my niche sites yet).

For KNS Financial, I probably won't do much with the design, but I do want to make a ton of changes "under the hood" to improve the site.

I need to improve the load time of the site, and I have to get rid of some plugins (for both speed and security). I am currently using 60 active plugins, and I know that I can probably replace many of them with simple code.

I want to have a toolbar both above and below the header, and I want to better integrate my categories. Since most of my improvements will be behind the scenes, am I missing any cosmetic things? What would you change about my site?

With Fat Guy, Skinny Wallet, I am looking to change the design (I never liked that green color) and some of the coding issues as well.

I definitely want to add a great weight loss tracker, especially since I'm moving toward my goal. Also, tracker for my debt repayment goals is a must as well.

What are your suggestions?

Wow, 60 plugins!  That has got to slow things down.  I'd recommend the W3 cache plugin if you haven't already used it, it sped things up for me.

There are also a lot of plugins now that do multiple things. For example, the Wordpress SEO plugin combines plugins like, XML Sitemap, RSS footer, breadcrumbs, all-in-one-seo pack all into one plugin.

I like the minimalist layouts of both your sites, so my vote would be to keep that style with some color tweaks. I also like your logos.

There are some good articles at socialtriggers.com about optimizing layout, giving readers fewer choices, and getting rid of unneeded widgets (not that you have them, but it is great stuff).

I redesigned my site completely after reading them.

Damn, 60 plugins is a lot.  I thought I was getting carried away with about a dozen.  You'll definitely want to reduce that number to ones that you really need.  That will drastically affect load time.

One thing you might want to change on both sites is to add some footer links to your most important pages, or at least pages like the contact page and about page.  Make it easier for people to get to key pages without scrolling all the way back to the top.

Overall they look pretty good though.  The only other part I'd maybe want to improve is making the sidebars better integrated into the design.
