I have that big ugly ad block of adsense on every post, and it is by far the highest converting position to place an ad that I've found. I've tested and re-tested having ads in different spots, and none of them even come close to the click through ratio of that ad block below the title.
Removing it from there for me would mean losing probably hundreds of dollars every month – which I really don't want to lose. And to be honest, in my 2+ years of blogging I've never once had a single complaint about the adsense ads.
I think most readers are blind to them and/or expect to see them on the posts. I'm sure there may be the random reader like yourselves that is annoyed by them, but then again i think most of my regular readers are reading via RSS anyway – so i'm not that concerned about it. My traffic, subscribers and everything else has continued to go up, so I don't think it' s harming my site in any appreciable way.

I do find it ugly, but the consensus apparently is that it just brings in so much cash.
I personally don't want to add that type of adsense to my blog, so at the current time, I do not. Perhaps, if at some point my traffic growth stops, I could experiment with it and see if it loses any readers in exchange for the additional income.
Currently, I have adsense at the top of my left sidebar and at the bottom of each post. The adsense at the bottom of each post has brought in by-far the most revenue. Probably not as much as it would on top, though.

Ha ha, I say it like that because I hate the fact that money influences anything in my life. I am lucky that I have managed to find a way to make a full time income from my blogs but it does mean some sacrifices in the name of paying the rent…. I see it more moral to put adsense up though than directly work for a corp or company who's dealings I don't agree with…. Even if the evil doers sometimes advertise on my blog!
I used to work as a full time graphic designer and although I love making pretty pictures and making sure things were technically set up I loathed doing things like cosmetic adverts or in some cases smoking and alcohol related ads (although I do drink myself), so I am happier with the way things are now. One day all my money will magically appear from nowhere and I can full time blog without ever making a penny :).

I applaud that you care, but I don't think anyone should ever feel bad/guilty for some ugly, obvious ads. No trickery at all, lol. I think that out of all the compromises that living entails, adsense ads are towards the bottom of the list on soul-hurts. :-)
Uber-congrats for making a dream work the way you could! I will totally be right there with you as soon as humanly possible, lol.

Crystal, you are a great and hard working blogger, I am sure you will be. A lot of people here already earn a lot more than me, it's just that I live on a low amount by being in Egypt so can afford to be full time easier.

Thanks for the postive vibes Forest. I "just" need to hit the $30,000-$40,000 range to make up for what I make now…in fact, based on how we live, I should be able to get by as a full time blogger with $25,000 a year or more. My salary and our hobby job money is just used for additional savings since we live off of my husband's salary. :-)

Can I just say that none of my posts had advertisements, but now you people have given me ideas! I don't think I'll do that big block up top though. I don't find it pleasing…but that is why I'm making a whole $0.50 a month from my blog and some of you have incomes.

The top block is the best performing, it's even recommended by google. I use Who Sees Ads though so i don't annoy regular readers. For search visitors if you find what you are looking for, hopefully you'll stick around and when you clear your cookies (or close your browser) and come back you won't see any ads.

I got rid of my sidebar adsense and now just have the beginning of the post. It's been the best performing spot by far.

I dont have any adsense on my site. This is for a few reasons – I dont like the way they look, and usually the are so irrelevant that many people dont click on them at all. On top of all this, I'd probably only make a few cents a week from putting them on my site. That's a trade-off that I'm not willing to make.
I understand that a lot of other people dont mind this – and to each their own. Everyone must make sacrifices and decide what to do and what not to do with their site. Though to those trying to filter out for regular readers, Thanks.

I think if you are using w3c total cache you are ok. I access several of my website's pages from different computers and I have yet to see adsense. But if I get to it by searching I see ads until I clear my browser's cookies.

I see that most people here mention AdSense–what are you opinions on that vs. networks such as BlogHer? I'm part of BlogHer, so I can't use AdSense, but I wonder if I'm not doing it correctly.
Regardless, thanks for the great info regarding ads on blogs–I'm just beginning to get into this

I don't know much about BlogHer, but advertising is all about supply and demand. I would think Adsense would have much more draw than some independent publishing group, especially in the areas of finance. BlogHer seems to cater to topics that aren't really that profitable.

Well basically if you use caching turned all of the way on, your website serves static HTML files instead of executing the PHP code. It would only execute the code once, and then serve the same result to hundreds of visitors.
So, let's say the first visitor came from a search engine, and the plugin decided to show the big ad. Now EVERY subsequent visitor will see the same ad when they visit the page, regardless of where they come from, because the cached results will be shown. When the cache expires this will happen all over again.
This has been my experience with WP Super Cache. If you have the plugin turned only "half on" or use another caching plugin that still runs the PHP each time, your results may be different.

Interesting, maybe it's doing a partial cache, or maybe the plugin has been updated to do the check in the client using Javascript, or maybe it's using an async request… I have no idea! I did see this issue using WP Super Cache.

I use W3 Total Cache and the only caching turned off is the database cache. So maybe that's what it is?
