Problems with new Wordpress version 3.5

Hostgator did an update to 3.5 Wordpress on two of my sites.  Problems exist on both.  In checking the Wordpress.org support forums, there are many in my situation.

What problems are you all having and how have you solved them?

One of mine has the issue of not being able to utilize the visual editor anymore.

FMV is not accessible on the backend through WP-Admin at all.

I am just starting to try to resolve these.  The Wordpress installation support forum has multiple instances of issue posts on the new version at http://wordpress.org/support/f…..stallation

I ended up going back to the prior version!  I had posting issues, difficulty uploading images and hyperlinks.

How did you do that?  Did you go through your web host?  I read that host gator will do it (for $15) for you, but Wordpress.org forums warn that there was a security fix in the new version…

I 'solved' my problem with being able to get into FMV backend via wp-admin by doing the following:

Using Filezilla, renamed the wp-contents folder to wp-contents.hold.

This effectively deactivated all plugins.  I was then able to sign in.  I deactivated the plugins using the wordpress interface, then (using Filezilla again) renamed the wp-contents.hold directory back to wp-contents.  Then I logged off the server on Filezilla and logged out of wp-admin and was able to log back in.

I re-activated the plugins one by one, but never found one that was causing an issue.  I suspect I re-activated them in a different order than I had originally, which may have made a difference.

I'm still working on the issue of being able to use the visual editor.  At http://wordpress.org/support/topic/visual-editor-disabled-1 someone is suggesting to

Try adding this to the wp-config.php: define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false); to the bottom of your wp-config.php file (just before the require_once line). First, make sure that your browser has JavaScript enabled.

Has anyone done this with success?

I've had to do that before on client sites – sometimes it does work. Usually, though, the visual editor problem is the result of a plugin that hasn't been updated for the new WP version. Try deactivating all your plugins and see if you can access the visual editor then. If so, you'll have to activate one at a time to see which one is causing the problem. Hope that helps!

Thanks for responding!  I tried de activating all plugins first thing and it didn't make any difference.  Now trying to find the wp-config file!

Time heals all wounds!?

After de-activating and re-activating all plugins numerous times, testing in IE vs Chrome, and re-installing wordpress from the dashboard, everything seems to be working now.

I have no idea why because nothing I tried worked to fix the problem with the visual editor, but it is now working.

It was the Wordpress gremlins! I swear, I'm starting to believe they exist.

I'm noticing some WP 3.5 bugs as well… notable, none of my H3 tag changes (color selection) sticks if I make any edits in a post. I have to make sure I edit everything at once, save, not toggle between Visual/HTML and schedule or post. Anybody else get this?

Any solutions? Or just wait for another update.

Oh, and after update.. I had a scheduled post this morning miss the schedule. So I rescheduled again for 8 minutes from when I scheduled, twice, and both times did not schedule and post, so I had to publish manually. Anybody else experience this?

Sam

I got Hostgator fix the WP upgrade problem apparently all they did was what Marie @ FMV mentioned

adding this to the wp-config.php: define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false);

I don't have any other problem related to the upgrade.

Sam, some of your problems may be due to a mismatch between your theme and WP. But scheduling and publishing is core WP functionality, so missing scheduling is not a theme issue. Are you using any specialized plugin for scheduling your posts or rearranging their order, etc? That plugin might not be working with latest WP code.

Just a thought, I might be off.

Hi SB,

I'm not using any specialized plugin.

Seems like the Theme is all up to date. I recently changed servers, and I've read it may have something to do with the DNS not pointing back? Thoughts on this?

And just after making comment that there were no other issue with WP. I just missed post schedule today. Had to manually intervene to publish. I also had trouble emptying spam folder and had to try multiple times. Looks like common WP code issue as my DNS didn't change.

How quickly do you allow your sites to be upgraded?  I generally do not apply a WP update until at least a couple of weeks after it's released, so that I can see if there are any issues that might come back to bite.  I also have two sites set up largely the same, and I'll normally update my lower traffic site first just to see if anything 'breaks', then wait another day or two before hitting Money Beagle.

Is waiting a week or two a bad move, since I know that typically a WP update closes security loopholes?

I do the same with my main sites. I have several others that I tend to update right away, especially the ones that aren't live yet since I know no one will see them. I think the most important thing is that you update as soon as you feel safe doing so; that way any security holes are closed off ASAP. (Of course I also recommend making a backup before updating, but very few people – at least judging by my clients – take time to do that.)

OK, but it's too late now for us. The good thing is, if this is a WP programming issue (debatable as some say its a server issue). then they'll come out with 3.5.1.

I'm finding my site has been wonky too.  I'm having problems where saving an article hangs and eventually jumps to a 404 page.  Yet, the article is actually saved when I go back to it.

Not sure exactly. They added the define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false) to the wp-config.php file on one site and something else on another. Looks like the same result.

The problem comes from plugins and themes that have conflicting code to what is in the new version. That config line seems to clean out the error.

Hi Eric – What did they fix? i.e. what was the problem in the first place? Thx
