My wife and I have been measuring cash flow instead of actually following a traditional budget. I've talked about it in the past on my site (http://edwardantrobus.co.cc/20…..low-budget) but we have been talking about going with a more traditional approach.
So I wanted to get some recommendations on either a website that will track spending against a budget (ideally), or a good template for putting one together in Excel. We tried Mint, but it was kind of funky on us, putting stuff in odd categories (coffee from the gas station is under groceries?), and not giving us flexibility we need, (such as not defining certain incomes as income at all, because they are applied directly to long-term savings).

You know creating a budget could be laborious. The best way to do this is to use software. It would make it very easy. I use Boachsoft Finance 2012. I create budgets and then I set spending limits so my budget is always on track. I think you should also use software. You could download a demo.

I must have known you were gonna ask this! I wrote about this just last week. My spreadsheet is straightforward (to me). You'll like it if you like old school Excel spreadsheets and don't mind the plainness of it. :)

I just realized it doesn't have the budgeted vs. actual feature you like. I guess it might not be what you're looking for. I use it for that, but I visually check the major categories for discrepancies (I like doing stuff like this offline).
What this spreadsheet will help you do is allocate every dollar toward an expense or other fund (insert lines as necessary). And it will also allow you to easily identify specific costs to cut if you are trying to live within a certain income each month.

Hi Edward,
I was reading this thread earlier on which might be of interest too you, there is a link to a trial run of the software as well as brief video which should show you how it works.
I haven't checked the whole thing out myself yet so I apologise if it's not what your looking for!

Here is another free budget spreadsheet based on Excel that might work for you. pearbudget.com/spreadsheet
It does have the target versus actual feature.
