Hello Everyone!

I am putting together a post that discusses the most common at home selling businesses, and would love it if anyone here with experience with a particular company could talk about it (I will provide a link back to your site). Mainly I am looking for pros and cons, figures (if you are comfortable with sharing), and anything else you'd like to provide.

Some businesses include: Avon, Pampered Chef, Tupperware, Scentsy, CAbi, Mary Kay, Build-a-Bear, Partylite, etc.

Thank you!

Amanda, Thank you for the opportunity.

Sold Avon at age 16.

Pros: set own hours

work hard and get compensated

small initial outlay

well known and reputable company

Cons:

Requires organization and discipline

May work for a while without being compensated

Isolated

Please link to an article I wrote about Mary Kay; Consider This Money Making Idea for Extra Cash http://barbarafriedbergpersona…..xtra-cash/

I've got a friend who is doing incredibly well with Mary Kay and would almost definitely be will to share details.   My wife did Partylite for a few years before the time/money balance swung the wrong way with new kids.   She'd also probably be willing to discuss anything you'd like.

Let me know and I'll see if they are interested.

You can read about my miserable experience with eBay on these two posts:

http://www.momsplans.com/2011/…..y-debacle/

http://www.momsplans.com/2011/…..-part-two/

I don't know that eBay is inherently bad, certainly many readers have commented that they make money on eBay.  I think I tried to do too much too quickly.  (And it was before I found Dave Ramsey, so I "invested" in the business when I really shouldn't have.)  Now I can't wait to finish liquidating it.  I much prefer blogging and writing as a side job.  :)

I have had a pretty good experience with Amway. I joined when it was quixtar a while back. I made money my first month.  I did have extra help and expertise because i grew up in the business and my parents had been involved.  My mom was able to leave her position as a microbiologist with the federal government because of their success in amway.

Pros: You get to set your own hours,  The amount of money you can make is pretty much limitless, there is a very high chance you will have a full support team to work with you from step one.  The profits from your business is willable to you children and kin.  The Amway Business is built on a pretty strong foundation, and is always on the cutting edge of things.

con: At times there seemed as though there were too many products, or new products being released at a time.   The meetings can also be kinda long depending on the support team you are with.

Hi Everyone!

Thank you all so much for the responses. Jason–I'd love if you could ask them about their experiences.

I will let you know when the link goes live (in the next two weeks I am thinking).

LOL, I was going to ask if buying discount jewelry on Biz.com when it first started and reselling to pawn shops would count.  :-)

@Crystal – Bidz.com, you mean?  As a previous shareholder–thank you!  Company really went down the toilet only a couple years after going public.  :(  I don't know how that correlates to when they went online, but man, that could've been a great company.

Yes, Bidz.com.  :-)  They were giving away $50 gift certificates for every new email signup, so I'd use that to buy a $60 diamond-chip and 10k or 14k gold whatever and then sell it to a pawn shop for $20-$40, netting me a $10-$30 profit.  I figured the spirit of the gift certificates was probably not a 17 year old with 15 Yahoo email addresses so I quit after a couple of months, lol.

My mom actually "claimed" one of the prettiest rings as her Mother Day's gifts in 2000 – I know I'm a little too money-oriented since every time I see that ring, I wonder how much it would have pawned for…

I sold Cutco knives for a little while back when I was in college. I had to buy the demonstration kit (which I actually still have to this day) and they gave training on how to do the demonstration and suggestions on ways to get leads. Lead generation involved things like making a list of everyone you knew or going to the mall and handing out contest entries to get names.  The procedure was to then contact the people and ask if they would be willing to watch the demonstration, and saying that they wouldn't have to buy. (Although of course some people did.)

The biggest pros were that the product was excellent and the demonstration was pretty impressive. I did make some money at it but it wasn't really right for me because once you've exhausted the people you know, it's a matter of doing a lot of cold calling — which isn't all that great because I had social anxiety. So that and the fact that the knives were expensive were the biggest cons.

Crystal and JT: Interesting…the 17 year old that took down the company…:).

Amanda,

I have done quite well with Ebay.  Let me know if you would like me to add my two cents given that some feedback has already been provided above.  Are you considering home based computing jobs as well such as data entry?  These are jobs, not businesses, and I know some that have done it.  I can solicit their feedback and report back if it fits what you are looking for.

I sold Pampered Chef for 4 years form 1999 to early 2004. I made about $150 per show, so it worked out around $50/hour, with time spent prepping & finalizing orders. I wasn't great at the getting shows part, so it was only a couple per month, usually. More than that and I may never have quit! The startup costs were so low – $100 for kitchen tools I wanted anyway. That's the thing with PC, too – everybody's gotta eat. So, even when they're watching the budget, an investment in quality kitchen tools to help them make the most of their grocery budget still makes sense.

I also sold Creative Memories briefly – very briefly. It was higher startup costs and stricter rules for staying active so I didn't last long. I mostly only turned in an order anytime I was buying a bunch of supplies for a project of my own.

I'm happy to answer any questions you might have on either one. Sounds like an interesting post!

Jackie, I sold Cutco too (I lasted 2 1/2 months…)!!!  I love my tomato knife and the kitchen shears that can cut through a penny!  :-)
