How to Drop Alexa Ranking After Changing Domain

Hi everyone! So I'm pretty disappointed..I was working really hard to drop my Alexa ranking and went all the way down to 240k. I decided it was time to ditch the blogspot url and get my own domain. Now blogspot redirects to my new domain but my Alexa ranking is gone… sigh.

I know it automatically resets since it's a "new" site, but was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to make it drop quickly. Shall I just continue to do what I've been doing? Do I need to let EVERYONE know to change the links on their blogrolls to my new domain? Seems kind of like a hassle for people to do that for me.

Thanks!

So your own blogspot URL for your homepage redirects to your new home page but what about each post?

I just clicked on one of your links in the interview you did for me and it goes to the blogspot URL for that post. How will those be redirected? On a post per post basis?

My thoughts for your Alexa are to just keep doing what you are doing. You will most likely be assigned a new rank soon and then it will drop again as you do your usual posts and networking.

It's nothing to get worked up over.  That happens to a lot of people when they leave shared blogging for self-hosted blogging.  If you have a solid following, then it will just be a matter of time until the Alexa falls back down to the level you were seeing beforehand.  And, it will happen much quicker this time.  Just remember, it is only one statistic.  Keep concentrating on content and your readership and everything else will fall in place.

As Eric said, it's not a huge concern. Your readers will return you to where you were initially. The .com certainly gives you more credibility.

I don't think there's much you can do other just work on building up more traffic.  Alexa is based on the domain name and you will essentially be starting from scratch with your alexa ranking.  Your existing following will help a lot with making that drop quickly.

By the way, I noticed your signature here does not have a link to your blog.  You should update that to possibly get some more traffic.

Really the only thing the alexa ranking matters is for winning over advertisers and for the yakezie challenge.  Beyond that it is just a number, and an inaccurate one at that.

You'll find that it'll drop in no time. Some people lose thousands of hits per day in making these types of switches. You made a good choice in moving early.

When I moved over, I think I was hovering just above 200k. It devastated me to start back at square one, but I was back around 200k within a month or two. Moving to a domain (and self-hosted – hint, hint) is one of the best things you can do for your blog, and now even if you move to self-hosted your domain will retain its rank.

For this issue, I used a plugin called Blogger 301 Redirect. It provided some code to change the Blogspot template to redirect to Wordpress and then on the wordpress side loaded the right post.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

Erika! Just keep doing what you are doing. You're amazing and your blog will keep growing just as it did on blogspot! I'm going to go change the link now on my blog ;) But yes if you post about it and some people forget, feel free to remind them!

Hey guys! Thanks for all of your insight :) It was a shame to see the 7 million alexa ranking after working hard to bring it down (and it took me awhile to bring it down haha). I didn't want to wait another year!

Andrea, what does self-hosted mean?? Does that mean switching from blogspot to … wordpress? Lol

Edward, where do I find this plugin and how do I use it?

Thanks!

Self-hosted means Wordpress, but not the free Wordpress (which has limited options and is kind of crappy).

I'm updating your link now before I forget – I was out of town and couldn't until today!

Once you switch to a self-hosted Wordpress installation, simply go to Plugins-Add New and search "Blogger 301 Redirect" When you find it, just follow the prompts to install and activate it then follow its instructions.

I did all these things and my Alexa is still  up compared to what it was prior to conversion (170,000s compared to almost 100K) – and still rising for some reason.  My conversion was in April.  However, I didn't every bump back up to the millions which was good.  I'm going to try running a couple of contests when I get back.  Traffic doesn't seem to have dropped off.

Sometimes it's just cyclical.  I got around 110k and have been steadily dropping back to the 150s over the past few weeks.  I have learned to stop being as concerned about it as I used to.  It is what it is.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I was definitely more concerned with it when it was in the 4 millions..but now it's dropping and I'm around 800k. I probably will stop watching it once it gets towards 300k. You guys were right..just keep doing what I'm doing.

I've found that guest posting has helped drop my Alexa in the past pretty quickly. I'm starting to do it again with my new domain and hopefully that will help it a bit more. I've also been begging people to update my URL :)

@FamilyMoneyValues- A contest is definitely a great idea. I'll look into that for my 2 year anniversary.

Thanks for updating my link, Andrea!

Thanks for the info Edward!

LaTisha – I'm signed up for summer teams, so I'm pretty excited about that.
