Especially those of you who are self employed and are a bit older (40+.) What are you doing for healthcare?

It's tough in the US because the price is high and the insurance company usually refuse to take anyone with pre-existing conditions.

Great Post Joe. If I ever pull the plug, I will be doing what you plan to do – use the Mrs. for her healthcare. haha.

Or you guys can immigrate to Canada, open up a successful business, hire some people …and that will guarantee your residency, after all you're giving back and creating jobs. And the best part through all of this is that you'd have Healthcare coverage.
Think about it, no pressure! :)

Does online business qualify? Moving to Canada or Thailand is one of my options.

Joe, have you looked into the new services that Costco offers? I know that they offer a wide range of health insurance and even dental now.

RB40, my wife and I are American citizens / Canadian Permanent Residents, and a large part of the reason we relocated to Canada in 2009 is the availability of guaranteed, affordable health insurance. As I have no wish to start a 'whose system is better' health care/insurance fight here (or anywhere), I'll send you an email with some thoughts on our experiences so far. Also, if you like hockey, Canada is heaven. If you like NCAA basketball (like me), you'd be very, very lonely.

We have insurance through my wife's employer (major US corporation). My employment has been unsteady and I've yet to actually work for a company that offered health insurance. Well, I did for one, but it wasn't offered to on-call employees, which is what I was.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

@MC
You should write a post on your blog comparing health insurance in Canada vs. the private stuff in the US. It be interesting to see the argument. And you do make a good point, NCAA is not big in Canada, but than options are endless in sports >> NBA, NHL, NFL, CFL, European Soccer, Golf, MLB….tons to choose from.

I was uninsured for 18 years. I know it's scary. I just didn't want to spend the money because I felt I wouldn't need it. For a large part I was right but looking back it was very stupid.
I have now had insurance for nearly 4 years.

In the UK we still have the National Health Service – not perfect but free access to health care for all subjects (yep, here we are all subjects to the Queen) and residents. The current government is doing all possible to screw it up – and my guess is they will do it well. Will cross this bridge when I get there but moving to Sweden, France or even Bulgaria is always an option.

Wowza. Glad you saved money during that time, and glad you're on it with your family!

My health insurance is through a large HMO. I have a high deductible plan with a HSA and pay out of pocket except for preventative care up to a certain amount. Monthly premiums are within my budget.
