You'll get there! I started my blog a year ago, but was only at 500k alexa until December of 2010. Then, during the semester break from my PhD program, I was finally able to promote better, and the alexa score definitely benefited!
Probably the most beneficial activity has been helping out to host carnivals and participating in Yakezie.
