Does Your Time On the Internet take away from Your Productivity?

Forgive my absence in the forum, but I have been working to complete my book. But recently I had a reflection and have shared it here: http://howwepreventwealth.com/…..ur-wealth/

And then I started thinking about how I got into blogging and how much time I spent until I was finally comfortable with this fact:

My blog is an outlet, and should be enjoyable. If I spend too much time trying to benchmark it against the masses, get obsessed with watching my stats, spend hours in my Google reader, and then shift every so often to Facebook to additionally get sucked in there, how much time do I waste in my own productivity? What other things in my life are being neglected?

Do you think that you have a good work-life balance among your blogging endeavors, family, and work? Do you have a sink full of dishes, a board game that has yet to be played by the family, or a load a laundry that has yet to be folded as you read this post?

What are your distractions? What takes away from your ultimate productivity?

I had to reply to this one. It's always personal, there's always someone ahead making incredible strides and numbers. You can't worry about them! You beautifully reflected why you got in to blogging. Don't ever forget your "personal goals" and get swept up by the masses. I believe one key to a wonderful life is balance. Determine your priorities in life and allocate your time to them. That said, I totally resonate with this issue!!! Thanks for bringing it up!

I think blogs written to optimize visits, clicks, and revenues are pretty transparent in their efforts.   A blog that is a personal outlet, as you said, is my preference as well.  It connects the readers to the blogger.  In fact, I hardly consider the uber-optimized articles of mass sites to be "blogs", in my mind, a blog is always personal.

Jaymus and Barb,

Thank you.

Barb,

You are absolutely correct to find balance. But with an asymmetric timeline in our days, it's the balance that is often hard to find.

Jaymus,

You are absolutely right.  Once the blog gets so big, the author seems to lose his or her readers. Not because he or she wants to do so, but I believe that it just becomes too hard to keep up. I would love more comments, but would not love more than I can actually handle.

My biggest distraction is trying to accomplish too much at once. I will switch from one task to another and sometimes neglect to finish the first task.

I spend about an hour a day writing for my blog, and although I am online all day long during my day job (or maybe because I am online all day long during my day job) I really don't spend time surfing the web, spending hours on Facebook, etc. I spend 15-30 minutes a day commenting on blogs, 5 minutes on Facebook, and 5-10 minutes here.  Emails though, are sucking my time. But, they're relevant to my income so I just consider it work.

I agree. My blog is a very personal outlet as well. Probably the thing I enjoy most is writing content on my blog myself. Sometimes, I sort of have to push myself to remember to read and comment on some of the quality posts out there outside my site! It's very easy for me to get carried away in my own writing and forget that there is a whole world out there!

Ouch … I personally make my site/blog less personal because I mostly want it to be about the facts of saving money and that takes up enough words as it is. You may be right though … maybe I won't connect with my readers properly … I don't know.

However, I think it's good to be different and as such I write long detailed posts and am a little less personable. I don't just want to be like everyone else!

Just to be clear though, the primary aim of my site is to help others and I hope while in doing so I can also help myself as well.

The internet is sucking my time up majorly, but a lot is because I am trying to learn as much as possible as I am still a novice.

I don't surf though.  I am usually commenting or picking up new ideas.  If I wrote for my blog as much as I comment/read, I would have a queue of 1500 posts.  Right now, the queue is 0.

All,

Happy New Year's Day. And Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to read and reply to this thread. I have learned and reflected on a lot of what you all had to say. I hope that other Yakezie members stop by; if not to comment, to at least reflect.

Jacob, I understand where you are coming from. Like I said in the past, I think this is why it is so important for us all to at least try to have so eye capturing title and layout for our post. I have many blogs in my reader, but I only read posts that capture my attention.

Mark, I do the same thing. For example, I was just balancing my bank account against Quicken, but I some how ended up in this thread??? The best way that I try to combat this is my desk top Sticky Notes program. When I get on the computer for the day, if I remember, I create a list of this that I want to complete.

Jackie, that's great. I suppose that I don't surf the web either unless I am looking for something specific. But once I find it, it becomes unstoppable like a interest post on Wikipedia. One link leads to another, and another.

Stephen, sometimes I too write just to inform my readers of things. These are my fill-in post. But from my short time of blogging, I think many people read blogs because of the personal touches as well as their informative nature. I know that I have to find that balance, the reason being, yahoo finance, cnn money, investopedia, etc are already huge resources and authority for many of the things that most of us write about.

Kris,

To save you some time, I come across a great website that teachings everything from SEO, and making money with your blog: http://www.dailyblogtips.com. I think between the experience among all the bloggers here in Yakezie, and one good website on creating a better blog, you would have all that you need.  For example, here are two great post on the daily blogging tips site that I found absolutely helpful:

http://www.dailyblogtips.com/w…..h-website/

http://www.dailyblogtips.com/4…..uld-avoid/

This man, Daniel, has been blogging since 2003 or something like that. So, I would definitely consider him a source of authority.

No problem. I'll do anything and everything I can to help out a Yakezie member. Sorry for the encrypted few sentences, however: "I come across a great website that teachings everything from SEO…" What was that?

I am new to this so the learning curve is high with the various marketing/networking tools. I think those things promote ADD. I'm sure as with any else, especially something of interest, you have to be intentional about balancing the various areas of your life. As I write this, I just remembered that I have been home for an hour and forgot to put away the groceries…see I need balance. Ha!

Good question.

Cheers~
