Hey all,   I have been thinking about how little I knew when I started my first blog (especially about keywords, seo, etc.) and have been wondering if others would start over with a different blog if they had the chance to go back in time to do it again??   I know that many won't consider after all they have put into their blog right now, but just theoretically. If you were starting a blog for the first time, knowing what you do know, would you choose the same focus?   | | | |

Starting over knowing what I know now? hmmm I would certaintly be faster in terms of putting the blog up, promoting and networking because all the tools are there for me already.

I'd probably wipe out the first 15 months or so and try to start from there.  I love Money Beagle though and wouldn't change the focus.  | | | |

I started over with My Broken Coin. Same focus, but at least now I know what blogging is all about. In fact I even like the name of my blog better now. :-) Blogs evolve… so do people. :-)

I learned a lot over the months, and I kind of like seeing the transition on my blog.  I would change things like social promotion, and guest posting, but as for my blog itself, I wouldnt change a thing.

I wouldnt change what I write about – i'm a fairly boring person on a good day, so no one would want to read if I wrote about anything else.  I'd probably handle a few things differently now though – like my transition to wordpress.

I would start a new site, but I wouldn't abandon Retire By 40. I put tons of work into it and at this point, I'd rather improve it incrementally. Of course, if someone offered me a million dollars…..

Would I start Personal Finance Whiz over? No, but PFW isn't my first site by a long shot. It's funny going back to my first blog 5 years ago seeing how little I knew about SEO, monetization and writing in general.  | | | |

I don't think I'd start over with Daily Money Shot. It wasn't my first foray into blogging so I definitely took what I learned with the first experience and put into DMS. Although I admittedly still have a lot to learn.    When I look at my first few months of posts, I literally cringe but I like to use as a benchmark for how far I've come in the last 6 months. Even if I were to start a new blog, I wouldn't abandon DMS. It would be like dropping one of my older dogs off at the shelter in favor of a new, shinier, more well-behaved one.  | | | |

Thanks – I'm curious, would you just do more of social promotion/guest posting? If so, I'm sure we all wish we would have done more of both. :) MoneyIsTheRoot said:

I hear a lot of people regret not moving over early enough. I'm glad I don't have that regret. Jeff @ Sustainable Life Blog said:

I wouldve started social media and social promotion sooner.  my biggest regret was waiting way too long to start a facebook and twitter account for the blog.  They have grown quite a bit over the past few months, but they could be that much further along.  Actually I just wish I wouldve paid someone sooner to guest post for me…I'd rather keep all my writing on my own blog quite honestly, with the exception of a couple blogging friends that needed help with articles during a time crunch or two.

If I could go back to October lol.. I would definitely have 5 guest posts running a month on other blogs.  I would also probably make my site a niche site rather than a broad personal finance site.  My next blog will definitely be a niche site.  | | | |

People have had huge success on niche sites, but I enjoy the blog myself.   5 guest posts? not bad. haha. ;) YourFinancesSimplified said:

I'm trying this out for the month of December/January.  We talked about this.. instead of writing 7x a week.. I will write 5x and give 5-8 posts aways for guest posts/staff writing.

Nice! I usually try to "jump start" a site with lots of guest posts towards the beginning and then will usually write a couple a month to keep links coming in. We'll see if it works across the board. YourFinancesSimplified said:

Hmm good plan.. If I start a new website I will definitely use the guest posting approach to build links.  But, when I started YFS I didn't know anyone.  It took me about a month to establish the little relationships I have I still have a lot of networking to do

Yes I would.  Money Reasons seemed like a good name, but really it has a bad vibe out it as in "He did it for money reasons, etc"…    Then for the first few months I just blogged and did nothing to promote it, waiting from google to recognize me (which of course the didn't).  Then there is the theme that I have… it's a beta version, and recently I've discovered some bad SEO stuff within.    So yes, I would like to start over, but it's my flagship blog.  So I will slowly fix what is wrong and hope for the best…

Me too. I would have made some technical changes and worked on building readership sooner but otherwise I have been pretty happy.
