American Express launched a new product called "Serve" to compete with PayPal. They're also giving away $10 to anyone who opens a free account. It takes all of 60 seconds to sign up.
Blogged about it on MoneyMamba: http://bit.ly/z8hp1Q

Thanks for the tip on the free $10, JT, and OneCent.. that is a great write-up.
I just signed up and got the credit right away.
I am pretty sure that Paypal will continue to dominate, as long as they are in bed with eBay.
It actually seems like their influence is growing (more and more sites offer paypal checkout).

Glad I read this to the last post. I was going to go sign up too, but I'm Canadian. All of the Americans on here should take advantage of this easy money. Thanks for sharing this JT.
I'm glad there is more competition for paypal though. They make some brutal business decisions with screwing over a lot of their customers. They are integrated into a lot of sites, but I think between Amex and Google they might be watching their back. Competition is great for consumers and businesses.

Thanks for the tip. Couldn't have been easier to sign up. $10 is lunch for 35 days if you eat enough ramen! ;-)

It's interesting to see how American Express evolves over time. They're obviously looking to at least meet PayPal's fee structure, if not eventually beat it. That's a pretty big divergence from their historically higher merchant processing fees as a trade off for what they claim to be a wealthier base of cardholders. I too hope they compete strongly with PayPal, as we could all use a little bit of competition in the online payments space.
@OneCent – I had no idea this was a 6 month old program! Dang – behind on the curve, and my $10!

When does the $10 show up? I registered but so far no cash. Am I missing a step?

I didn't see one. They offer $5 for up to 10 referrals.

That's good news to see some competition…but until they beat paypal fees I dont see much of a point.

Got my card a couple weeks ago. Serve is looking to compete with PayPal, used to be known as Revolution Money Exchange.

Thanks for the heads up. I just signed up, verified the email, but I didn't get the credit.
I'll check back tomorrow.
It's hard to imagine someone unseating PayPal, but Amex may have the backing to do it!

Are there any retailers that allow you to pay via Serve or do I have to transfer the funds to my bank account to spend them?
