What a great post.  I will be sure to do some of these.

I also checked out Pat Flynn's page and saw that all affiliate links should be no follow.  Yikes.  I have a lot of editing to do.

I read Pat Flynn all day and saw that, too. I'll be spending some time this week figuring out how to make things no-follow… :)

Did she mention why all affiliate links should be no-follow?  I know my advertisers paid me for full juice, so the only links that would effect for me are the ones to Yakezie, fellow bloggers, and the Financial Blogger Conference…

He mentioned that without a no follow, he could be spilling too much link juice and might get penalized by Google from it.  Obviously that doesn't affect your links that advertisers paid you for.  I think it was more in reference to links that go to Commission Junction or some where else, those kinds of affiliate links.  Here is a link to the post:

Hi Penny!

Here's how you make a link no-follow:

Original link: <a href="http://www.conocophillips.com/…..gasvs.aspx"><span style="font-family: Calibri; color: #91682a; font-size: small;"><strong>displayed on the ConocoPhillips website</strong></span></a><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">

Change:

<a rel="nofollow" href="

http://www.conocophillips.com/…..gasvs.aspx"><span style="font-family: Calibri; color: #91682a; font-size: small;"><strong>displayed on the ConocoPhillips website</strong></span></a><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">

Just add that into the beginning and you are good to go!

You could also use the plug in – Go Codes to make the affiliate link an internal link

Just to clarify. Both nofollow and normal link leaks link juice. Your (link) advertisers will want a normal link for SEO purpose.

For affiliate links, e.g., ones pointing to CJ or FlexOffers, it's a good idea to use nofollow link.

If you use Wordpress, you can use GoCode plugin which I believe automatically nofollow (and mask) affiliate links for you. You can also exclude these links using robots.txt file.

Very good article.  I was actually happy to see that I do quite a bit of these on the list already.  Though SEO seems to keep eluding me.

Pinyo hit a good point.

Because webmasters tried to "pagerank sculpt," Google started dividing pagerank between all links, and then only passes it to those that aren't no follow.

For example: On a page with 10 outbound links, 5 no follow, 5 follow, each of the 5 follow links would get 1/10th the pagerank passed on.  No follows get nothing.

On a page with 10 outbound links, all follow, each would get 1/10th the pagerank passed on.

Amanda,

I just tried that and added <a rel="nofollow" href=" right before the link.  Then, when I checked it, it just redirected back to my site and showed an error message.  What did I do wrong?

Hi Melissa,

That is very strange! Can you either post the link here for me to see or email it to me and I can see what it looks like?
