Day 4 – Analyze a Top Blog in your Niche

Today your task
is to spend time on a successful blog in your niche. You're not there
to do anything but watch, learn and observe how the blog operates.
Hopefully in doing so you'll learn a lot about what works on blogs like
yours – but also discover some opportunities to differentiate yourself
and meet the needs of potential readers.

This is a great way to learn as a blogger.  I have done this with several blogs.

About two weekends ago, I read all of Naomi Dunford's archives at Ittybiz.com.  I learned so many things by doing this.

First, I got to see how her style progressed through the years.  It was fascinating to see her grow as a blogger.  Also, I got to see how she built her blog in the beginning.  I think that we forget that big bloggers weren't always big.  Little blogs grow into big blogs.

This was a great exercise and I encourage everyone to try it.

I am personally turned off big time by the magazine-style blogs, but I have found a lot that I like on sites like Financial Samurai and Frugal Zeitgeist. A lot of what I do on my site is based on what I personally prefer and what I have learned by observing other sites – that I feel – are successful and have a great look.

SoloBizCoach – great approach! Sounds like you got a lot from this exercise, and you're so right that it's easy to forget that even the big bloggers started small! Very encouraging for those of us who are still small and hope to grow.

InvestItWisely – I don't feel like the magazine style is right for my blog, either, and I've taken some styling cues from other blogs like mine. But, with less graphics because I'm totally un-graphic-savvy! Blogs like mine but bigger all have their own graphics. I should get on that and add a logo…

I've been reading up on Get Rich Slowly recently.  I had the most fun reading the first months of posts over at Everyday Tips and Thoughts.

Oh, and from reading from both of those sites, I definitely zeroed on that both of those bloggers participate in the discussion like I do…I'm definitely keeping that up.

There are definitely things that I can/should do to improve.  I need to make an "about me" page (I'm really struggling with this! I'm just not good at talking about myself… not that you would think that from the blog!) and I need to be more present in the comments section.  I know these are basic things, but I just haven't gotten there yet.

I read The Simple Dollar all the time.  I will go back through his older posts and analyze what and how he is relaying information.  It is a great blog that is easy to read but delivers great information with out a lot of distractions.

Bump for June Build Your Blog Month!

I went through Smart Passive Income yesterday, taking many tips from his content and posts about layout, SEO, and engaging the reader. I've got a list of things to do!

I've been haunting the top 100 on Wisebread lately, trying to learn from them as well as the current Yakezie members.

@Family Money Values: The Wisebread top 100 does offer a different perspective. I have looked closely at many of these also. I think the following page, the next 100 or 101-200 also has a lot to offer.

I could learn a lesson from every blog: be concise, darn it!  Concise is something that I am not.

Afterthought: Without this afterthought, that might be my shortest post here. Go figure. Wink

I look at other blogs often focusing on pages they've added (other than posts), advertising and features.

I do all my reading via Google Reader so normally wouldn't see the actual blog unless I comment.
