Great tips TFB. I will just add another data point, text ads do waaay better for me than image ads. 95% of my (very small) revenue is from the ugly text blog right below my title, 4% from the block below my post and ~1% from the sidebar image block. RSS is in cents.

ANOTHER EDIT
I've tried the image once again on The Dividend Guy Blog for 2 days and results were disastrous. I probably lost about $40 in 2 days ;-)
went back to the good old text only. that's my advice!

Oh wow! I didn't realize that. I have been using image and text ads, and that could be the reason why I haven't made as much from them. I'll be sure to check Google Analytics and Adsense to compare my earnings based on ad type.

I just changed my adsense ads to text ads only, as well as increased the size of the adsense ad below my post titles to the recommended optimum size (336 x 280). I'll be sure to let everyone know how performance changes!

I didn't know about the images thing; in fact I've heard the reverse (that images work out better), so I'm going to have to try it out for next month and see what happens! :)

Ok folks – I have a ~ 3.5 week update for everyone. On Jan 26th, I 1) changed the size of the adsense block below my post titles to the size recommended above, and 2) made it so that all of my adsense ads were text (no images).
From Jan 2010 (start of my blog) until Jan 26th 2011, I made $A with Adsense.
In the three weeks since I made the change, I have made $A (almost more in a month than the entire first year of my blog). There may have been some other factors involved in this increase, but it has definitely convinced me about the text ads and below-post ad placement.
Thanks for the good tips everyone!

Pretty convincing to me! I switched to Text only, using 468x60 banners for the first 8 posts. My theme doesn't play nice with the 336x280 so I went to the one below that 300x250? We'll see how it goes. Great tips and thanks to all for sharing. I'll keep you posted on my end as well. Good luck to us all!
I am using AdSense Optimizer. How do you guys tell which ad is performing the best? Can't find it in AdSense or Analytics.
Thanks!

Go to Analytics (I'm assuming you have it linked to your Adsense account) > Content > Adsense. Bottom middle will show a few of the best performing posts. Click on any post URL to see specific details about its performance.

Just realized that's not quite what you asked. Go to Adsense. Click Performance Reports. Click the arrow by "Entire Account By Day". Click "Ad Units".

Thanks for the tip. This helps, but I was wondering how to figure which ad performs the best. First one, second one in the middle of my blog, or the third and final one near the end. Is there a way to get that granular? Thanks!

You would have to set the ads up as individual channels in Adsense to track on a per-ad basis.

JT, are yous sure? I have custom channels, but only three of them. I have 4 ads though. I name my ads based on where they're at – "Below_First_Post" so I can tell which ad is which. When I go to "Ad units", I see this:
and Adsense tells me how much I've earned with each one.

Interesting that text ads have performed so much better for everyone. I put a text banner under my header briefly and I found that no one clicked on it… even tried to blend. I'm jut dipping my toes with Adsense… right now I only have ads in the sidebar. 160x600. The only ads that perform there are rich media and animated…. it must be that in obvious central places text ads perform better but in areas that people otherwise wouldn't look you need to have something animated to catch their attention. I'm at about $18 since I turned on ads in December.

Semantics difference.
You're right, you don't have to have individual channels, but they need to be named individually. That's what I meant…I just goofed my words.

I don't think you're allowed to post specific numbers about click through rates, eCPM, etc … but you could probably post what percentage increase you had in these areas without violating the ToS.
I think that information might be more relevant because those numbers aren't impacted by increased traffic and popularity of your blog.

I think you misunderstood me. I believe what you had before was fine. I was just wondering if you would post more details about your growth in click through rates in eCPM without mentioning actual numbers.
For example, saying something like "my eCPM doubled after I made the change" or "CTR went up by 50% after making the change".
You can't say "my CTR went from 3% to 4.5%" … but I don't think there is a problem saying it increased by 50% after the changes. However, I'm not expert so don't take what I'm saying as gospel. I don't publish any numbers myself just to be safe but I know many people do and I'm guessing they know exactly how to get away with it while still complying with the ToS.
