I got really busy at my real job for about a week there. And in that week I only published once (and totally stopped commenting on other blogs). The results from the Alexa rankings and hits on my site also collapsed. From 60 to 80 a day down to a lowly 10 per day. My Alexa ranking also stalled at about 450,000 (and in fact even went up a little )
This week I've been busy posting, commenting and generally getting out there, but I can't seem to shift my page hits.
Anyone else ever been in a slump? I know its only been 10 days, but its still pretty depressing looking back at my 200+ hit spikes. How do I get out of this?
Thanks

You just have to keep going and focus on your long term goal, which is to build a blog. How long has your site been around? I didn't see an archives section, but maybe I overlooked it.

Keep pushing, it will change. I've had months where things seemed stangnant and then – Bam – traffic moves again.
Remember, blogging is a marathon not a sprint.

Great advice Craig, I have been on an organic traffic plateau for a while now and just starting to push out of it.

I was getting 150-220 a day in September and October and now am barely hitting 90-100. It might just be the season. And like the others have said, concentrate on just keeping up the momentum. I started making the most progress when I stopped checking my stats every day and just concentrated on writing and commenting.

What everyone said. Also, keep writing, and commenting, and supporting, and participating. It will come around.

It happens to everyone I guess. I have been busy traveling and caught up with work for year end goals etc. That means I have not written regularly and not commenting much. My traffic has gone down too. We just have to keep plowing through. Do what you were doing being and I think they will come back. I have stopped checking my stats for now, that feels better.

Agreed. Everyone plateaus at some point. You just have to keep plugging away at it. I will try to send some traffic with a retweet of a post!

I think it's the holidays too. A lot of people are traveling and the office is pretty bare. No enough office workers dreaming about not working.

Thanks all. I guess this is where the hard work come in – lots of posting and not much moving. Its comforting to hear I'm not the only one who has been through this.

I was in a long stagnant moment, but kept pushing through it…and did it. But now I am in another one like you. Just know that you just have to keep your head on blogging, networking and getting your name out there. Basically what everyone has said.
We can do it, one day at a time.

If you have the right posts, you could look to a site like Reddit to post a link. It might get you some traffic, and usually a little sticks around after the boost!

Hey uhnw,
Perhaps you can focus on other goals besides the ranking? For me, I still have some to hack away. But thinking forward, eventually I will stall out, too. I'm thinking I need another metric to gauge myself and keep myself going… My guess is when you get your mojo back, the ranking will take care of itself. Good luck!

Traffic stats and Alexa rankings are a very interesting thing. I was very busy this fall with my first semester of my PhD program, which caused my Alexa ranking to get to around 500,000 but in the 1st week of December, when I actually was commenting on other blogs and posting actively, it jumped 100k to around 400k. Moral of the story I guess is that your blog will always be there for you! It really is a marathon, not a sprint! haha

I agree with what everyone else says – keep on going. Here are a few other thoughts too.
If you are thinking long term, learn about SEO. I am not saying you should write keyword driven posts, but make the most of the tags and such so search engines can find you.
Speaking of search engines, have you submitted your site to all the search engines?
Watching your Alexa ranking climb can be fun and rewarding. However, don't fixate on it. My Alexa ranking is way better than many people who have a heck of a lot more traffic than I do. It is through the help of my Yakezie friends that my Alexa climbed.
There will always be times in life that you can't participate as much as usual. Once your site is longer established, it's published content can take care of itself and you will still get plenty of traffic. But if you are new, it can affect you a lot more if you can't comment and such. Give yourself a break, don't stress out, and your traffic will bounce back when you have some more time.

Here is how you submit your site:
Add your URL to google: http://www.google.com/addurl/?…..ue=/addurl
Add your URL to bing: http://www.bing.com/webmaster/…..age.aspx
Add your URL to Yahoo: http://siteexplorer.search.yah…..om/submit/

First check if your site is listed already. In google, the query is site:www.mysite.com. The other are the same, I think.
Using the search engine submit form is about the slowest way to get indexed. I'd start with blog directories, like weblogalot or toprankblog, then move on to some RSS feed submission sites, like feedest, plazoo, and rss001. Also, in Wordpress, Settings/Writing/Update services, change it from just pingomatic to this list: http://www.loanofficermarketin…..gsites.txt.
Generally, I can get a new site indexed in well under 24 hours.

We've had our ups and downs as well. 3 days ago we had our highest page visits (153) and today we're barely scraping over 30. Like our stock portfolio and buy/hold strategy we simply soldier on and assume things will get better as long as we stick to our strategy.

The way to really get out of this is to stop caring about the stats. ;) Focus on commenting, promoting, and writing good content… it sounds simple, perhaps too simple, but I think that it really does work. Persistence and dedication will pay off. Just like the market, you can't let the short-term swings mess with your mood too much. It's the long-run that matters.
