Alexa Ranks Skyrocketing?

Hi all,

I noticed that my Alexa rank has been skyrocketing lately. I figured it was because I haven't been commenting on other sites lately, and the blogger traffic on my site was probably down, therefore reducing the number of visitors that have Alexa installed on their computer.

BUT, my visitor ranks have actually been increasing and I have noticed that a lot of you fellow bloggers have experienced a huge jump in your Alexa ranks as well.

Does anyone know? What gives?

Came here to find out if anyone else noticed. I don't pay much attention but saw that mine doubled since the last time I checked. Checked out a few friends and noticed theirs are way higher now, too. I'm guessing they changed their algorithm? Will be interesting to see if it's something permanent or temporary.

I saw my numbers increase about a year ago and I cannot seem to reverse it. I agree something has changed.

Guys,

glad I'm not the only one. My Alexa ranking has gone really up (which is down) and there is no way this can be explained – my visitor and visits numbers have gone up a lot as well.

I'm just taking it as 'one of the mysteries of life that actually don't matter that much'.

Yeah, I'm thinking about just pulling the number off my page.

In 2015, I plan to show my readers my visitor numbers as I have a serious goal to raise them in the upcoming year. I don't care all that much about direct advertising anymore, so I don't feel like there's much risk in showing my sacred visitor numbers. What do you think?

I think you're right. Maybe they no longer count us looking at our own page? Who knows. I think I'm just scrapping the whole Alexa rank graphic off my page soon anyway.

Mine started going up as soon as I cut back on commenting on other blogger sites. However, over that time my total traffic has increased quite a bit. Basically that tells me the tool doesn't do me any good.

I'm not sure how I feel about Alexa. Is it as useful as it once was, or has the Google juggernaut made it less relevant?

Oh thank goodness!  I'm not the only one!  I am also in the position of having my Alexa rank jumping despite increased traffic.  I haven't been commenting as much on other blogs as I used to, but I still do some on a weekly basis.

I don't think Alexa really matters a whole lot anyway – and really hasn't been a good measure of a site's success. Personally, I'm more interested in unique visitors, and having a group of readers who regular visit and enjoy the blog.  So I say, don't worry about the rankings, whether or not they changed the algorithm (which seems like a plausible explanation for the increases).

Yup, I'm with you Squirrelers. I already removed my Alexa badge and am focused purely on the visitor numbers this year.

My has been going up and I thought that it was just because of the Christmas holiday. I assumed more people were visiting all sorts of shopping sites and thus hurting my ranking. But after reading this, maybe they did make a change to their algorithm. I too have better traffic now than ever and my ranking keeps dropping.

Wow, I'm so glad I found this thread. I was just complaining to my spouse last night about the negative jump. And that in spite of my traffic going up 150 % since the summer.

Now, I'm mad I spent any time even worrying about it.

I guess there's security in numbers.

Thanks for sharing everybody.

I'm not sure Alexa was really ever relevant, was it? Once people realized you could game the system by making sure people with Alexa badges read your site, the gig was up. I like the idea of knowing where my site stands so I hope it's changed to a less "gamey" metric.

Yeah my Alexa score has basically tripled over the last 6 months or so. Glad to see everyone else is in the same boat. Who cares : )

Once I reached the almighty Alexa goal of 200k to become a Yakezie member, it became irrelevant. To show how inaccurate the figure can be: I peaked around 100k and I now find myself at 3.4 million. My traffic hasn't changed all that much.

It looks like my Alexa rank has finally stopped skyrocketing – must have been an algorithm change. My rankings went from about 120,000 to 300,000 and seems to have settled there. I'm not too worried about it. I'll just keep writing as usual! :)

Glad to have found this thread as well…  Agree that Alexa rankings are not relevant as they once were.

The problem with those of us attempting the Yakezie challenge – we're at a complete disadvantage. Oh well….Might be time to add more criteria to the challenge if Alexa is no longer so relevant…What do you think Sam????

There has been an algorithm change around October. Apparently now they don't just take users with the Alexa toolbar/plugin, but a wider panel, which is making it more accurate. Before that, it was much easier to manipulate, and that's why people pointed the flaws in it. I guess they want to be taken more seriously now, hence the changes.
