I should know this, but I don't.  (I know, it is embarrassing!)  I have a button on my blog for people to sign up via e-mail for updates.  Is there a place I can access their e-mail addresses?  Bloggers always talk about how important reader's e-mail addresses are, and I have no idea why or how to access them.  Also, people talk about having a newsletter for their blog.  What do people put in the newsletter?  How is it different from the material on the blog?  Please help a clueless fellow blogger! Embarassed

I love your questions! You always ask something that I want to know too. Laugh

Are you using a feedburner for your email service? If yes, then you can go to Publicize, click on Email Subscriptions, scroll down and click on View Subscriber Details. Hope this helps…

I've been considering a newsletter myself so I'm interested to hear from others who already do it. I know a few bloggers who use Feedblitz – it can import your feedburner address and allows you to send a newsletter in addition to your rss.

I use feedburner, but I only added the e-mail feature a month ago.  (I didn't add it, the person who designed my blog did because I am clueless!)  Today I have 1139 feed subscribers, but I only have around 70 e-mail addresses, I think because I just added that feature last month.

While Feedburner is good for emailing posts, a lot of bloggers use a service like Aweber to send out newsletter type emails. Aweber gives you a lot more control over how your message will look, plus you can maintain different lists: One for those who get daily posts, one for newsletter subscribers, another for people intersted in a different project you're doing, etc. It's not free, but it's something most bloggers will want to transition to once they start making a steady income. Just one of those things that adds professionalism, IMO.

Your bigger number for Feedburner is most likely your RSS subscribers who get your articles in their reader of choice.  Those who subscribe via RSS aren't automatically in your email list.

You can use your email list in feedburner to email additional info besides daily articles.  It's a little bit of work since you need to keep track of your address book and watch for people joining and leaving.

Look at who has signed up and make sure they completed the process.  There may be a bunch who never finished the opt-in.  You can shoot them an email to remind them to finish their subscription.

I just started on Aweber a little while ago.  It does cost money but the features are far more rich than what Feedburner offers.  Do you need Aweber or something similar?  No.  You should know what you want to do with your newsletter first before you pile money into it.  You can always import your feedburner email list over.

If you are interested in Aweber, here is my affiliate link to sign up:

I use a plugin called "subscribe2".  It might be using the feedburner email thing (because if you enter your email and click subscribe it take the person to the feedburner confirmation page). But it provides extra levels above feedburner – public and registered subscribers. Registered subscribers who are registered on your site can customize their subscribtion. Subcribe to just a single category, receive exerpt or full post and html/plain choice. I like this plugin.

I use Aweber for my newsletter delivery. It allows you to sort through your email addresses and I love the autoresponder. All I have to do is attach the newsletter and site members will receive it monthly.

Can you explain further about the newsletters?  For instance, in my blog I cover budgeting, freezer cooking, etc.  So I would have a newsletter just for those interested in freezer cooking?  I guess I still don't understand what people write in their newsletters and how it differs from the actual blog posts.

Also, it seems like quite a bit of work.  What are the benefits of having a newsletter, both for the blogger and the readers?

My newsletter is just my blog posts from the week so nothing special. But I could also send a couple of blog posts a month just for newsletter subscribers or have special contests for them. Some people do have special content newsletters which does take more time but would provide more value. It really doesn't matter as long as people sign up. The main point of an email list is to get loyal followers that are willing to buy what you think is good for them. If you really aren't interested in making money from them ever, then it's not really worth any work and feedburner is just fine. So the benefit for the blogger is having people that are interested in what you would sell them. The benefit for the reader would be content because the best way to get people on your newsletter is to give them something for free like an ebook. I have my ecourse that signs people up for my "newsletter". So they get the information from the ecourse and I get people that would be interested in products that will help get them healthy financially.

I have been blogging since the end of March, 2009.  I only really tried to seriously grow it into a business since this June, 2010 because I am trying to supplement my husband's income so I can stay home with my kids.

In June, 2010, I had 90 subscribers.  I started offering a giveaway or two a week, making signing up for my feed optional.  I also had a guest post on Deal Seeking Mom that helped alot.

After the giveaways, most people stuck around.  I still do one or two a week, but I have only had about 5 giveaways where I made subscribing the main method of entry, only because I paid for those giveaways.  The rest were optional subscribing because I didn't want people to sign up if they really didn't want to be there.

I also took part in a few blog parties.

I use MailChimp.  It's free up to 1000 subscribers and will allow you to email your RSS feed, if you'd like.

I use aweber as well..  It has a lot more options available as far as sending weekly blog updates, changing how your newsletter looks, etc.  highly recommended, but it is an added expense – not free.

From what I recall MailChimp was only free up to 500 subs and there was a limit like 3000 emails that could go out a month?

It's 1000 subs and 6000 emails now.    Your numbers were right until a few months ago.

Just an update to this thread…I just signed up for Mail Chimp for my newsletter.  The new limits for the free account are up to 2000 subscribers and 12000 e-mails/month.  It was pretty easy to setup and it even let me publish my rss feed to the newsletter for now.
