I got this email this morning from someone I've never heard of. More content would be good. But I'm leary of the idea because a) I don't want to give up editorial control and b) I wonder if this could be some sort of scam.

Read this and let me know what you would do:

Hi,

Do you need “Guest Bloggers” for your blog? I represent a large community of writers who are trying to get their unique family friendly content published on sites such as yours. My writers are just looking for exposure so there is no charge to you for the content.

The writers I represent are professionals and are not churning out garbage content that reads like a sales ads. Each piece takes time to create and is usually 700 words or more in length. We hope to establish a long term relationship with you. You can also feel free to monetize the articles with banners ads or Google Adsense etc.

PS. I am sure you will want to see some writing samples so just let me know and I can show you several.

Thanks to all who took the time to read.

I got the same email about 6 weeks back.  After inquiring as to whether they were looking for sponsorship posts or guest posts he never wrote back.  My guess is he wants a business link included and knew he wasn't getting it for free from our site.

FrugalForty – The longer you blog the more of these you will see…it's almost always the same thing… someone with a business link trying to convince newer bloggers that they are being the nice guys by providing free guest posts.

Frugal forty, I would rather suggest replying to the sender and asking for a post. See if there's a link or not.

May be the sender is genuine..

Given the number of registered users on this forum and number of regular users who post, there's a high chance the sender of the mail is reading your post, so pasting the mail content may not be a good idea..

95% of the time the post WILL contain a business link.  It is less stress to ask what type of link will be submitted prior to tentatively accepting the post.  The fact this email was sent to myself and KNS and there was no response based on our replies is a pretty good indicator what the intent of the form-mail was for.

As for the content of the email – they send it out as a form-letter-spam what can they really expect?  I get that not discussing advertising specifics here makes sense but when someone is basically spamming bloggers with hope of getting a post accepted they're not really being personal about it nor is there any confidentiality agreement in place.

I have seen a few of these in my time as well.  The person makes it sound like they are writing to do you a favor (Look i'll give you a high quality post written by a good writer) when they are simply looking for a backlink.

It is never a good sign if the same email is getting sent to multiple blogs. They are definitely offering content in exchange for links. It is completely up to you, but I wouldn't imagine the quality would be that high and it wouldn't be something I would accept.

If you do decide to go for it you should find out what the links would be and what the quality of writing is. Also don't be worried about rejecting it if it doesn't meet your standards

Yep, these emails are pretty frequent. Just some people that want a free link to a business site. If you are hard up for an article, it might not be a bad idea. I used to do it in the beginning, but as your site grows, you'll learn that people will pay good money for those links and you don't want to be putting them on your site for free. Sounds like you're moving up in the world. Congrats! :)

The 'doing you a favor' part is the key phrase here.  They always present it in such a way that you should be falling all over yourself to respond back with a big yes, when all that does is give free links that they should really be paying for.  Before Yakezie, I think I fell for this once, but not so much anymore.

Usually, I'll write back asking if they'd like my rates for a business link guest post.  Most of the time the ones that act like they're doing you a favor don't even respond back.  I've thought about just deleting them but figure if I do, I'll end up missing the one that would actually pay :)

I've just got two of them this morning, one is exactly the same as frugalforty's. The other one I'm not sure, is there any way to make a little income from them?

Thanks for the replies.

My mind's made up then. I'm only going to post things to Frugal Under Forty that I think will actually add value to the site. Posting frequently is helpful to building the blog. But if it's crap, well, then the it's crap, and nobody needs another place to find crap.

I'm glad I asked you guys about this because it made me think about a guest posting policy.

I put up a policy long ago but most of them don't even read it. Still, it's nice to be able to respond, "Please refer to the guest post policy on my site." Most of them go away after that. :)

I get these a lot.

I usually reply with I'm not accepting guest posts at this time, but if you want you can sponsor a post.

That usually scares them off, but many times they come back with " how much?" and then end up paying for a sponsored post.
