I got an email from adsense suggesting how to change my adsense to maximize earning potential. It said they reviewed my site and asked me to add their suggested unit to specific pages. Did everyone get a similar email? Or is this some sort of scam? Just curious as to why do they care about what we have & don't have? This is not an email that everyone gets before getting booted off from adsense, right ?

I remember Mike (The Financial Blogger) referencing a similar email a few months ago. They told him to add images to his ad units. The funny thing is that he lost money when he followed their advice.
As far as getting booted – I never got an email when they booted me from Adsense. The code just stopped working and when I went to log into my account, I got a message saying that I was banned.

No, that's not an email you get when you get booted–don't worry about that.
It's really just their way of reminding you that they have image ads, which as Khaleef says TFB says, image ads suck in terms of conversion compared to text ads. One text link unit may have four separate ads, an image ad is only one ad. With four links, at least one is likely to strike a visitor's fancy whereas image ads would require several page views to offer the same exposure as a multi-ad unit on one page.
In terms of spam, phishing, etc., all emails from Adsense can be found in the messages area in your Adsense account. ;) Just read them there, if it concerns you.

Thanks Khaleef and JT. Its a relief that it is not a good bye email.
They didn't ask me to add images. They just want my adsense moved on a few pages (they have the specific urls), they feel if I move to the place they want I will get more clicks and in a few other pages where I don't have ad sense (I have affiliate ads instead), they were pitching for adsense. I don't think I will follow their second suggestion (don't know if they will kick me out for that), first I might try.
I am just a little paranoid about them kicking people (Khaleef, Robert @ College Investor) without doing anything wrong and without any warning. So was scared to see a random email…
Thanks again for the answers.

This is Google's way of verifying their theories on what works and what doesn't! You may not necessarily make more if you do these changes.

I didn't get an email like that one, but I imagine that the best thing to do is just to keep doing whatever adsense strategy is earning the most money!

Looks like you're the only one that got the email – I didn't get one. Just keep doing whatever works; I wouldn't worry about getting booted.

I did not get one either. I am guessing that the suggestions Google is making will somehow benefit Google, but then again, maybe I am just a cynic!

I got an email telling me that my ads were underperforming because they were text only units. For some of my blogs, (my investing blogs), I make more money with text only ;-) It doesn't hurt to try their suggestion, the worst case scenario is that you will lose a few bucks after a day. Just keep a close tracking of your before/after stats ;-)

I've had a similar email. My experience was the same as Mike's. I made the changes but income decreased. No thanks!

I never received one of those before. I agree with the others when Google bans you, there is no warning email.

Thanks everyone. I think I will leave my adsense alone seeing the experiences of others.
Thanks.

I've never gotten it, but I'm considering switching to only text as many people have made good points about them.

I second the all-text ads. I eliminated image/animated ads and have just text ads now. The earnings with just text ads easily easily gets a lot more clicks than the other types.

Even with non-AdSense affiliates such as AdBrite, text ads seem to do better.

I've had the opposite experience. My CTR and RPM is almost 4x higher with image ads than text ads over the last 30 days. I agree that it's "common knowledge" that text ads perform better–but I would encourage you to split test for yourself–things are changing all the time. :)
