Are multiple domains worth it?

It may be a weird question, but I am considering buying a few similar domains and having them all redirect to one site.

Say I have freemoneytips, simplemoneytips and awesomemoneytips all redirect to bestmoneytips.com. Will my other three redirect domains have a PR and metrics of their own?

If I have the same content on those four sites, I could be flagged for non unique content, but the only plus of having three other domains point to that main domain will only be exact google searches for that keyword right?

If someone looks for Free Money Tips, would I get extra points for owning that domain even though the advice would come for bestmoneytips.com? Or is buying a similar domain only a way to prevent competitors from getting it?

I have seen a recommendation to register the sites with different hosts, get a few posts on each, and then 301 them over to the main site to make them stronger.

This is for a new site, not an established one, if that makes any difference.

Hmmm….Interesting question Pauline, but if you are doing 301 redirects, then that site won't have any stats.  Search engines don't provide stats to a site that has a permanent 301 redirect on it.  A 301 is seen to search engines as the site is no longer on that domain and it has been moved permanently, so they will put stats on the domain that it is directed to.  I don't know how you would put posts up on a domain that has a 301 redirect to another domain.  You wouldn't even be able to reach that domain if you typed it in because the redirect is in the htaccess file and the redirect happens pretty much immediately.  The only time you want to register multiple domains is if you don't want others getting them or you want to get a couple that are mistypes of your current domain.  If people type it in, then they will be redirected to your main site.  You will receive no benefit from registering different domains.

Do you have a link to the recommendation that you got?  I don't know how this person thinks this would work.  The only way it would work is to create a blog with posts on each, build links to it and get it some PR and then redirect them later down the road (like a few months).  This won't really do much to the main site because I am sure the content would be different on each domain and you would have to then put it on your domain.  Just seems like a lot of work for very little to no gain.

Probably not worth it unless you plan to develop them as unique sites or are worried about brand protection.

Thanks Pauline.  I think that is a lot of work that probably wouldn't really do that much for you. With the new Penguin update, doing exact match domains with just a little content really won't do much for you.
