For the past 2 months I haven't used any form of seo. However, I do get many views from search engines. Most of the times, I just create crafty titles that play to search engine users. Do you think an seo plugin will really help me, or should I just stick to what I'm doing?

Do you already have a theme (like thesis, Atahualpa,…) that already has SEO elements built into it? By SEO elements I mean a place to put title, description & keywords? If you do, then no, you don't need any SEO plugin. If not, then All in one SEO might be a great addition and it might push your SE traffic even more. Do it when your blog is young… I have been meaning to go fill out my first 8 months worth of posts, but it just is not happening… You will save that trouble.

I use atahualpa, but I don't have the seo option turned on. Do you suggest I turn it on? I've had enough success without any seo additions, so I'm hesitant to make the switch.

It def. won't hurt. So go ahead turn that option on and start filling those fields from now on (and tackle a couple of old post every week). Title and description are very important for any SEO. If you are getting traffic without that, then your posts are already SEO wrt to the content. It will get better if you add title/description to the mix.

I use Atahualpa too and went from 25%-27% search engine traffic to more than 45% search engine traffic over the last 3 months by adding and using the All in One SEO Pack and Scribe SEO (but that one has a monthly fee…plus, it's only helpful if you need SEO help in the posts themselves like me…I sucked with SEO but now seem to hit the key words dead on 99% of the time).

Yep, I agree with the others. Before I used SEO, my search engine traffic was about 6% of my daily traffic. Now it's about 25%!

I too use atahualpa but I started early w/ All in One Seo so I use that instead with all the options turned off / ignored in the ATA Panel.

Crystal, actually you don't need both. As long as you fill in one of them consistently (or you can just add the <title></title> and <META NAME="description" CONTENT="whatever your description is"> in the html) that will be fine. All they do is add the title and description tag to your html <head> area using an interface. Adding them twice will not give any more advantage. For someone starting out with Atahualpa or thesis, I would recommend filling out the fields the themes provide properly and no add more plugins. There is just no need for AIO just for that purpose. The less number of plugins the faster the site… esp. if the theme already does what the plugin is supposed to do…

SEO plugins can be a big help. I think that you should definitely use them.

70% of my traffic comes from google….and it is all about the filling in the data at the bottom of the post either in ATA or All in One
Yoast has a fantastic guide to understanding all that stuff

I agree. You need to fill out the stuff at the end of the post, such as Title, Keywords, and Description. It not only is what Google sees, but it also shows up if you post your content on sites like Facebook.

Hey Crystal, Would you mind expanding on what Scribe SEO is used for, whether it's worth it or not, and throw in your affiliate link as well if you have one ? I've heard good things, but don't know much of the specifics…I just know that my keyword selection is not up to spec and want to do what I can to make it better. Thanks!

Geoff, Scribe is useful mainly as a checklist. It has certain good practice when it comes to SEO like whether your keyword is in the title, description, early in the post, enough # of links and finally keyword density (whether it is too low, too high). The first 3 things are easy, the last 2 takes some practice, esp. the keyword density. You will automatically start doing it after a couple of months, but it is very useful for those initial months to write like you normally do and still have an SE optimized post. That is what I use it for anyway, Crystal will be able to add her opinion…
IF Crystal doesn't have an affiliate link, heres mine – http://www.wealthinformatics.c…../go/scribe
Scribe has a keyword tool, but it is not any better than google keyword tool. If you are mainly looking for keyword selection use google keyword tool, traffic travis or market samurai. Talking of market samurai, I will add that affiliate link too

Hey Suba, did you have to write Scribe with a plan of how you will market the software? I tried to become an affiliate a while ago, and they denied my application. Then they asked me for a detailed marketing plan.

Khaleef, no I didn't have to write anything (in fact I have not made a single affiliate sale as I don't write about blogging and promote it in my blog). It was not auto approved (thesis was), it took 2 days and after that I got an email from copyblogger to verify my subscription. Thats all they asked for. Sorry! I don't have more information on the marketing thing they asked you.

Thanks for all the help! Quick question. When I use google keywords to find keywords to insert into the seo fields, do I want to choose a keyword with a lot of competition or no? Also, it makes sense to choose a keyword with the most searches, correct?

Suba hit the description spot on. I do think it's worth the monthly fee, but remember to ask for a discount (if you ask nicely, they will help). I use the Scribe Keyword Analyzer to help me out there and then use the main Scribe Analysis to rate how well I did with SEO in my posts. I am scoring 90% and better normally now as opposed to starting out at 52% and working my way up, lol.
Here's my most detailed SEO post: http://www.crystalclearthought…..imization/
Here's my Scribe Affiliate link: Scribe Makes SEO Simple
Hope this helps!

I normally look for keywords with lots of searches and low competition. Double wham :)
