At what point did you start to monetize your site?

I'm newish to this blogging game and am wondering at what point did you start to monetize your website?

Right now I have absolutely no advertising as I try to build my reader base. I feel like the advertisements will discourage new readers. Am I going about this the right way? Or should I have advertisements from the beginning to set the correct expectations?

My main goal right now is to focus on building quality content and becoming a better writer. It is my belief that the rest will come with time. Hopefully I'm right! LOL

Thanks everyone!

Welcome Steve

You might want to conduct a quick search on the term "monetize".  This topic has been inquired. discussed and argued about a number of times in the past.

If it's a matter of focus, then yeah, worry about writing. But if you have some time to add in a couple adsense blocks, go for it. I think I made $0.20 my first month, but they might as well be there. It'll help you get your site layout perfected, regular readers won't notice or care (ad blindness), and you'll be all set for when the traffic does come!

I will definitely search through some of the older posts. Sorry, I didn't mean to beat a dead horse.

Tom, I agree with your point on the site layout and I guess you never know when you might get a spike in traffic.

I agree with Tom.  Plus, if you add ads later, you run the risk of annoying the readers who have been there with you since the beginning.

Direct advertising is the way to go for small blogs. Also, don't try to find advertisers while you're still so new, because it's almost impossible. Just focus on building your base.

I agree with Tony. Don't get greedy. Just continue writing posts and build your readership. If you have a huge subscriber base then the advertising dollars will come your way for sure. If you work backwards, your site will not grow nearly as fast, if at all.

I agree with what others have said. Concentrate on writing good, useful, and provoking content and the rest will come.

That's exactly why you're so successful, Derek! By the way, I look forward to reading your September blog report!

I put Google Ads on right away.  In my very limited experience it seemed to me that they put better ads on the longer the code has been on the site.  So I wanted to start the clock on that.  Mayby it's coincidence but that's the trend I've seen on the sites I've run.

Other than that I just let the advertisers come to me.

I haven't yet… but it's been more of a hobby for me until late.  Now, I'm passionately pursuing a more business like attitude… in the sense of serving others, being committed to content, etc.  As a part of my redesign (almost done), I'm looking to have a couple of ads, but nothing that "junks up" the site.

I added Adsense from very close the beginning of my site. I definitely didn't make any significant money off it the ad, but I thought it was good to get used to incorporating it in the layout.

I tried installing adsense but it produced the most ludicrous ad for my site, so I have decided to scratch it for the time being.

@AshelyB. If that's true, it would make sense to put adsense on asap.

It seems like the general consensus is to put adsense (or other advertising) on right away. I'm going for it..

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Take a look at the "who sees ads" plugin as well.  It is can be customized a great deal and you can hide ads from regular readers (who don't tend to click them anyhow)

SPF, do you use this plugin? I ask because I always see your ads. I thought about this plug in but then got overwhelmed with the set up.

Hey, SPF.

I haven't been able to get Who Sees Ads to work with Atuhualpa. If you figure something out, please share the result.

All the ads shows up no matter what I set who sees ads to.
