Hey all. I have seen a handful of people experience serious problems lately ranging from hacking to plugin errors. I already backup regularly, but a new Problogger post made me think to share it here:

Maintenance plugins

  • WP Database Backup: Backing up your blog is extremely important—you don’t want a freak accident to destroy all your work. This plugin allows you to schedule backups. I personally send them to different gmail accounts for each blog.
  • WordPress Backup to Dropbox: Back up your WordPress files to your Dropbox account.
If you use Gmail, just create a filter and weekly auto-backup of your database with the DB backup plugin and it will always be there just in case. Backup to Dropbox does exactly what it advertises. You can get an account for free. (If you sign up with my link, I get a bonus 250mb of storage for free!)

I've been using WP-DB Manager, but  I failed to set it up to email backups for Edward Antrobus. It also has a tendency to send me null files on occasion–database backups of 0 bytes

Thanks for the heads up on the dropbox plugin, I'd been trying to figure out how to automate file backups.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

That Dropbox backup plugin looks interesting.  I'm going to have to look into that further.  Thanks for letting us know about it!

I use Back-Up Buddy and I'm very happy with it.  I also used it to migrate servers in minutes.

@insurancedoesmatter I have been using Dropbox for about 6 months. I find that I use it more and more every day. It is useful for blogging, backups, and sharing files with friends.

I've been meaning to look into this for a while now, so thanks for the links. Just the motivation I needed to set this up.

I am with dreamhost and they offer a back-up every 30 days. I have only used it once, but it was extremely quick and easy.

I will definitely look into Db Backup though, it seems very interesting.

I have been using Dropbox for about a year and am pleased with it.  You can use it for more than backups.

For backups I have a backup file sent to my email everyday automatically. When I have needed a backup my host has always had one for me but it is good to have your own as well to be extra safe.

TightFisterMiser, I bet your backup is your database only? This does your entire WP install including your theme, plugins, and database. Redundancy is always a good idea.

Thanks to this post I am now backing up my database daily to dropbox.  I hope the backups overwrite instead of just piling on

I am using Code Garage, but they're starting to get expensive with their recent hike to $30/month…
