Mike:
Our numbers are going down in terms of time spent on the site. Here are the numbers for the past month:
We have about 160 visits per day, 100 uniques, on average. We do not have much traffic from search, only about 15-25 per day. That also helps. For the past month the google analytics stats show: 3:34 minutes per visit, 5.11 pageviews per visit. 24,909 pageviews total. 4,873 visits, 2,895 visitors. 65% referring sites, 23% direct, 11.6% search engine.

2:01 average time on site since launch back in 2010
2:10 average time on site for 2011.
For some reason, the last 5 days show 3:38, each day being high. It's interesting how volatile this can be, and perhaps variations are impacted by outlier visitors spending an hour on the site searching archives, etc.

personally I find the <10% bounce rate to be the most amazing… im starting to trend towards 60% and I thought that was an accomplishment. How long has your site been up and running?

I had a post go kinda-viral this weekend, which altered my average time and page views a bit.

Mike,
I considered that except our direct traffic numbers are lower then our referral numbers: less pageviews and less average time on site. I think it's because we do not have much social media traffic and because we tend to write long posts.
