For a while, we have been pretty concerned about having back-up.

We now have back-up systems on all our sites and they are done 2-3 times per week. Look at this:

http://blog.sucuri.net/2011/06…..ecurity%29

this is VERY scary…

do you back-up your stuff?

i actually didnt for a long time… I just recently did two weeks ago, I downloaded a plugin because im a technical idiot…if it wasnt for the automated plugin I may still not be doing it…but it would really suck to lose everything.  I dont know that I would go back to blogging if that was the case.

about 3 weeks ago, one of our servers busted (there is a piece of the server that literally burned). We would have lose most of our info for 2-3 weeks (our servers all have back-ups) but since we do back-ups on our end too, we didn't lose any articles…

but don't you guys think the backup services provided by the host (i.e. godady) is sufficient? you can always restore it as of the last update (daily at midnight for example) ???

yeah but 3 things can happen:

#1 the Fed is taking over a bunch of servers because there is shady sites hosted by the same servers as yours

#2 if the server blows, they might be in trouble recovery the data…

#3 if your server get hacked and the backup are hacked too… good luck

those are extreme situation but at one point, you can't ignore them. I can't live this kind of risk over my head anymore ;-)

I have a plugin that e-mails me the database backup weekly. Is that sufficient, do you think? I get the e-mail subscription to my own blog and all comments come to my e-mail, too, so I could recreate a week's worth of posts if I absolutely had to.

I screwed up my site temporarily when I was messing with wp cache. Now I back up at least once a week religiously!

Guys,

There are plugins that

1) will email you your database copy (but this does not back up your "entire" blog content like theme customization etc)

2) back up the entire content to amazon cloud.

I personally use both AND I download an entire copy to my local external hard drive once a month. Amazon cloud I have it backing up every week and delete the back ups that are more than a month old. So far it has not cost me anything (because our blogs are not that much sizewise.

Even if I have to pay I expect <$1 a month. I have been backing my my personal harddrive, think TONS of photos, videos and even larger amount of immigration documents (yes, I have more immigration docs than photos) and for this month I have been charged 3c.

I recommend you go the extra mile to back things up, after all, it the most important thing we have here.

This is a very good reminder.  My hosting is redundant with an auto-failover.

BUT…remember that even your personal PC can crash and burn.  HD recovery is expensive, and you may have data from advertisers (EINs etc.) that you don't want really want a technician to poke through.  I'm working on reviving another site of mine, and I've written 60,000 or so words to that end.  Thanks to this reminder, I've zipped it up and put it on my server.  I can't imagine what would happen if I lost all that work. Yell

I use plugins to email me copies of my database just in case my hosting company has issues with their servers. I have been looking into backup services that do all of the work for you.

I have a plugin that does a backup of themes, plugins, and uploads once a week and sends me a email. But, those emails go to my address on the domain – I still have to remember to download them. Does anyone know if there is a way to backup our emails? I can't afford to lose those either.

Khaleef, can't you just add another copy to be sent to your gmail?

Also anyone see any problem with backing up on the Amazon cloud?

I keep the attachment on an email in my saved box, so that it's available from any computer, not just the one I use.  Yes Im sure something can go wrong there as well, but after awhile I think we tend to be overly cautious…

I think I can do that – or just change the email address.

But I still would like to backup the emails – I have a lot of important correspondence that I would lose.

I've never heard of Amazon cloud – how large is the free storage?

5 GB storage, 20000 get, 2000 put and 15 gb transfer free. As I store only the last 2 weeks' copy at any time, I didn't have to pay so far. to hit 5 gig you will need to have a LOT of posts/pictures. Even if you cross the limit it is 0.140 per GB. I don't think I will be hitting even 1 GB anytime soon :). The backups are zipped. To give you an idea, I have ~250 posts, most of them have an image which is stored too and I use thesis. So everything put together, my zip file is 35 MB.

Losing everything would definitely be very scary. I think I have 200 articles that I've written (all original) and I do not have many of them saved elsewhere. I think it's about time to make sure my files are indeed backed up.

I back up my site with a Joomla extension called Akeeba Backup.  I then download that from the server and keep a copy on both of my pcs and on a thumb drive.  I download backkups of the blog and the template and do the same.  Once a week for both.

However, I also keep a copy of all articles in Open Office on my hard drive.  Back in May I viewed a site which hacked into my pc and hid all the files on my hard drive plus some other nasty stuff which I am still recovering from.  I had just backed up some of my hard drive directories, but not all.

My software engineer son says I should back up to an external hard drive as well, which I haven't done as yet.  I do keep copies of pictures and other docs in my safety deposit box as well – but just on a yearly basis.

What is the plugin to backup to Amazon?  I'd be very interested in that.

For those using a db backup plugin – you might as well have your db sent every day.  To send it to a gmail account is free with lots of storage (unless your site is really that big).

Why risk losing an article or comments?

Automatic Wordpress Backup.

I haven't actually used it, yet.

For my db backup, I have sent weekly, but I subscribe to my own feed in GReader, so I'll still have every post.
