I get ripped off by a couple at the moment. I was going to ban them using the htaccess file …

Which is better? Simply ban the IP or go through the process of contacting them?

Guys, if the sites that are ripping off your content have Google Adsense, then you might want to contact Google, too.  They have strict TOS about their ads being put on pages that don't have original content.

There are two benefits to this:

a.) The thieves may get their Adsense account banned (hehehe – I would wish that on anyone except those folks who do nothing but steal content from others)

b.) It established that you are the owner of said material, so that if Google ever notices duplicate material YOUR account won't get banned for it… The Adsense folks (computers?) are extremely trigger happy and it is almost impossible to get a banned account back if they shut you down – even if it was unjust.

LiquidWeb is a FANTASTIC company.  So in that regard, at least be happy that the thieves are using a company that won't tolerate it.

AWFUL experience with them JT.

The list of requirements they DEMAND to deal with thieves is ridiculous.  I have to send a SIGNATURE and about 7 other things to them?  C'mon.

And their automated mailings (which they told me they turned off – and then I got more auto mails) are obnoxious.

Sure, they'll remove your content – after you've done bunches of work to prove your content is your content.  They don't even bother to investigate until you meet their requirements.

I second complaining to adsense. If my site was ripped off, I check if they have adsense. If they do, I just fill out the adsense form. That takes care of most of the rip off site (90% of them have adsense). If it is a site without adsense, I have not done anything other than adding my post url in the feed (they take your post off your feed) just to tell the search engines what the the source of the post is. I guess I could complain to the hosting/DMCA. But when I tried it once it went nowhere, so I just started using adsense.
