I just logged into my Google Reader account and found out that Google Reader will be retired after July 1, 2013. I do most of my blog reading through GR and it makes it a lot easier to keep up on all the blogs I follow. What is the best alternative to Google Reader?

Feedly is offering a "seamless transition" from Google Reader – you can allow it to access your Reader account and pull all your subscriptions automatically. It's a free service, but it's app-based (Chrome, Firefox, Android, and iPhone) and not browser based. I haven't been able to try it yet – their site is buckling under all the people flocking to it tonight – but it's well rated. I'll be interested to see what new services pop up between now and July.

Google really and truly only cares about the money these days, don't they?

This makes me sad. I'm trying to decide between newsblur and feedly right now.
My requirements are:
1. Cloud-based
2. browser, android, and ipad interface
Easy social sharing is a huge plus.
From your 305 subscriptions, over the last 30 days you read 6,696 items, clicked 0 items, starred 11 items, and emailed 3 items.
Since February 28, 2010 you have read a total of 300,000+ items.

I managed to get started with Feedly late last night and I really like it so far. It imported all my feeds instantly and I like the apps for my phone and iPad. Each post has sharing buttons at the bottom that are easy to use. And of course free is never a bad thing!
Jason, if you try NewsBlur, let us know how you like it!

So far, Newsblur is disappointing, but that's probably just server overload. It's super slow this morning, but looks pretty. If I can get it to start moving a bit faster, I'll probably drop the $12 annual fee to go premium, just to give it a better test.

Anyone try The Old Reader? Supposedly based on the old features of Google Reader.

I've got my list down to:
1. NewsBlur
2. feedly
3. The Old Reader
4. Netvibes
Is it amazing that I am using Google Reader to find an alternative to Google Reader? Here is a good post from Gizmodo offering alternatives.

I just migrated to Feedly and I think it's a pretty good experience on Firefox (of course downloading the extension is annoying, but oh well).
I'll try it on my android and see how I like it there too, but I think I'll stick with Feedly because I'm already used to it.

Businesses have to be profitable. I doubt you'd find any company that would maintain a product that loses money.

Bummer. Thanks for the tips Andrea, I'll give Feedly a try. Hope the next one isn't feedburner…

I officially hate the feedly android app. It makes reading far less convenient.
Newsblur took a while to import and update, but I do follow 304 feeds, so it's hard to blame them for that. Haven't tested their app, yet.

Sounds interesting. Google has been going the wrong way with accessibility over the last year, so it would be nice to be able to easily read things again. Why does everyone want to use grey text!?!
Like every other service, it seems, they are struggling with overload ATM.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

I understand that. It was apparent that they could never figure out a way to consistently deliver ads that would make it a profit center. Still, it was a service used by hundreds of thousands, and every one of those users would be in 'Google' pages for as long as they were active. I have a tab open with my Reader all day.
So, it means there are that many less touches to Google. I can't see that as a good thing, and to me there's value in those users spending that much time on a Google page that I think has inherent value, but apprently Google doesn't see it that way.

For those looking for a mobile alternative, I highly recommend Flipboard App.
I've put together a tutorial about how to set it up, since it isn't obvious:

Flipboard came as bloatware on my phone and I haven't used it once. I don't even know what it does, so I'm definitely going to read this. It looks like I was probably the only one who never used Google Reader.

I thought I'd revive this and see what experiences were for people that have switched to other services.
I decided to take a wait-and-see approach since there was a few months, and I'm curious what people think who have already switched to new services. For those who commented that the 'new' services were slow from all the migrations, have you noticed any improvement?

I use Newsblur constantly. I like the interface, and the easy sharing options. It's great in a browser, great on iOS.
For the Android, it syncs slowly. Sometimes, it doesn't mark the items as read, so I see them again in the browser. Sometimes, it doesn't want to load all of my items. I am a bit of a power RSS user, so I may just be taxing the system with 307 subscriptions.
