Can any of you who use wordpress provide insight on the best anti-spam plugins and your success with them. After moving my blog from blogger to wordpress I was inundated with 156 spam comments last night. For now I installed the Captcha plugin, which requires you to solve a math problem, but I was wondering if anyone had other plugins they loved. Thanks in advance.

I love the Disqus commenting system. Some people hate it – many workplaces disable it, for example – but I have only had 2 spam comments since I started using it last April. I get emails when someone includes a link in a comment, and I can reply to the email to approve or trash it. I can also respond directly to the emails to reply to the comments, which I love.

I haven't had any problems with Akismet.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

Same here, Akismet is very good for my blog, but sometimes real comments get caught in there. I try to go in and check the spam folder every couple weeks. At least 2-3 comments from real people will be idling in there!

Get the checkbox.
It's called the GASP plugin. Basically it just adds a checkbox for commenters to confirm that they are human. It cut down on my spam dramatically.

I agree with LaTisha, I have the same plugin and it works pretty good, you still get some here and there but not as many as you would without it

I've noticed that checkbox plugin has been pretty popular lately. Now, I don't know if this is just be being stupid, but a good percentage of the time, I forget to check it and get yelled at. It's kind of like the math problem for posting on this forum. At the end of the day, it winds up being a PITA for humans.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into both Askimet and GASP. I'm not a big fan of Disqus though I'm not ruling out any options yet. 180+ spam messages weren't fun to route through!

I feel the same way about the checkbox and most captchas. They're a PITA for the ones they're supposed to be letting through. I've been using a plugin called AVH and it's done wonders. It filters based on IP address. Using a blacklist from StopForumSpam, if the IP address is on the blacklist, it prevents the commenter from leaving a comment. My spam levels have gone down dramatically. I've been using it a little over a year, and I've had 2 false positives. They're easy to fix, just add the IP to a whitelist.

I use WP SpamFree. It's a bit of resource hog but it blocks a lot of spam. You don't even see it in your spam folder.

Yes, I hate it and my workplace ban it. Many yakezie blogs remains un commented because I can't comment on them

I used to use WP spam free but then I noticed that I had regular comments that were getting 'blocked'. You can't go through and filter for legit comments.

I use Akismet + Conditional CAPTCHA. If someone is marked as spam by Akismet, Conditional CAPTCHA gives them a second chance. If you are not caught by Akismet, you don't get the CAPTCHA.
I also use it with Disqus, which I think ads a great touch.
