Betterment CEO Interview Questions Needed for Finance Carnival

Hello,

I was approached by Betterment to do an interview with their CEO, obviously because they want to promote the Betterment service (basically an automated investment account that invests in stocks and bonds and easily adjusts your risk ratio on the go).

However, I was thinking it may be interesting to put together a "carnival" of interview questions from top financial bloggers (you guys and girls), with the answers from Betterment.

If anybody is interested in participating, please post a question here that you would like to ask the Betterment CEO.

I will submit all of the questions, and then post a carnival with the answers and questions.

I'll give credit for each question with a link back to your blog, which you can choose a link for if you want (just include your link below), probably something related to investing would be good, or if you have your own Betterment review already, I'd be glad to link to that.

I'm not exactly an expert on the current financial market, so I figured you all may have some great questions, but any beginner questions are great as well, so no need to worry, just shoot out whatever question you would like to ask.

Anyway, I thought I'd give this a try, so if there is enough interest to have a few questions, then I'll put it together.

Thanks in advance for your participation.

As a passive investor, I'm a big fan of what Betterment is attempting to do. The questions that I'd be interested in are as follows:

1) Why did you all choose to invest funds from investors in ETFs and not index mutual funds?

2) Why did you all feel the need to invest in all of these different equity ETFs (show below) to make up the equity portion of the portfolio, when investing in VTI would technically cover the entire stock market by capturing the Wilshire 5000 index?

  • 20% VTI: Vanguard Total Stock Market
  • 20% IVE: iShares S&P 500 Value Index
  • 20% IWD: iShares S&P 1000 Value Index
  • 15% IWN: iShares Russell 2000 Value Index
  • 15% IWS: iShares Russell Midcap Value Index
  • 10% DIA: DIAMONDS Trust Series 1

I personally thing (like My Personal Finance Journey) that Betterment is great for passive investors.

A question that's really off topic is:

1) Can you disclose to much on average how much your investors (in Betterment) are making?

A not so off topic

2) Why haven't you created a way for Betterment investors to take on short positions.

You can see my Betterment review here. http://www.investorzblog.com/betterment-review/

Hmmm….looks like a sparked an idea for them…

I approached them about doing an interview for my blog: Easy ETF Strategies with Betterment.com.

Smart marketing on their part.

Feel free to take/borrow any of the questions I asked.

One good one is "How value does Betterment offer to charge an advisory fee instead of having an investor doing cheaper on their own?"

Thank you to everybody who posted a question so far.

I'm preparing the interview to submit, but there's still time if anybody has any other last-minute questions.

My question (if it's not too late)

1. If rumors are true that Betterment is going to be offering Traditional and ROTH IRA accounts, would you be able to speculate about what the fee structure would be for these? Would the fee structure be the same as the type of accounts that are currently offered?
