Beware of pingbacks to Maleware sites

Okay, unfortunately I have a few sites that are now mirroring my content too.

Today I got a pingback on a site that I didn't recognize, so when I clicked it, it was fairly empty.  I think I liked on contact us just to see if it was empty too.  And then my antivirus software popped up a maleware detected message!!!

If I had just approved this pingback, I would have funneled my readers to a site that would have installed maleware on their machines!

So be careful with approving pingback unless you know and trust the site first.  Or at least check it out

I had no idea – thanks for sharing this tip. Can you believe how much vigilance it takes to protect a blog from all the rotten hackers, trojans, spys, hijackers, malware, etc.? Don't get me started…

This is why I love having a Mac! Of course that doesn't help my readers, but I usually check out pingbacks/comment URLs that look sketch.

Yeah, I've noticed a lot of this lately. I am always skeptical, so if it doesn't look or seem right, I just delete it without even checking it out.

Especially if it's on an old post and the surrounding text seems like spam.

I have been thinking about just turning off pingbacks, but I don't want to keep links from Yakezie folks.

I turned off my pingbacks a while back exactly because of this.  However, it meant that I didn't always find out about the feed stealers as quickly so it's taken longer to find them and deal with them (DMCA).

It's a pain, that's for sure!

I got nervous, so I went and did a restore on my workstation from an earlier point in time, and then ran the antivirus scan again.

There's always something new with the internet, sometimes good and sometimes bad…

I agree, that's the best course of action to choose!  I've noticed a lot of these sites end with .info or .biz or something similar.  I still check them out, but most of the time they are bogus.

Yeah me too.  It very easy to turn them off, but I also like to know when a site has linked to me.  I have google alerts set, but that system doesn't catch them all consistently.

I've never heard of using DMCA, does that work?  If so, please share your experiences with that process, if you haven't already!  I've just started to notice that other sites have started to steal my site info.  I've started linking back to myself more because I figure if they are going to steal my content, why not get some link juice back…
