A story to go with your coffee!

Yesterday there was an unusual spike in my site's traffic.  Most were valid referrals, except one from seo marketing services online.com.  That site topped the list, yet I couldn't find a single link from there.

They didn't have a sitemap or a robots file (odd considering they are an 'SEO' firm).  There was a forum, but the link was invalid.

Queried Google for a cache and sure enough they had a forum meant *only* for search engines!

The topics within each post were all keyword embedded spams!

Next I checked my site logs and sure enough there was a pattern.  They were using a cluster of proxies – 1 IP was visiting 2 or my pages at regular intervals.  There were atleast 80 visits last I checked.

I'm guessing they are probably scrapping contents for their forum spam farm – flattered, but also annoyed!  Yell

Anyone else with  unwelcome visitors?

I get unwelcome visitors regularly, but that one is new to me.  You can send an e-mail to their host and Google to let them know what is going on.

The host is the same as my host!  I'll email them and see.  I don't expect much to come out of it though.  Their forums actually had registered users as GoogleBot and Baidu!  Both names of search engines!

I have noticed them visiting my site as well. They scrape sites to steal content.

this has happened to me too. I just recently submitted my blog to some webstie that someone posted on the yakezie forum. He said it would increase traffic, and sure enough it has. However, it has only increased traffic with spam websites.

It shouldn't hurt your site, so I wouldn't worry too much about it, but you should report them to Google.

Contacting the webmaster is useless, because they know what they're doing and aren't going to change.  Contacting the hosting provider could help, but it's a crap shoot.  Contacting Google will definitely help, because they are always on the lookout for spam sites like this.
