I got this today:
From: Autumn Pietraszewski <autumn@benzingapro.com>
Subject: Partnership Opportunity
I'm Autumn, and I work in marketing and business development at financial news outlet Benzinga (http://www.benzinga.com). To give you some background on Benzinga, we are a financial media outlet with three main areas of expertise: real-time news, actionable trading ideas and insightful commentary. We cover all aspects of the financial markets along with solid and growing coverage of business, economics and politics. We have over 2 million unique visitors per month, and our partners include Yahoo! Finance, AOL, TheStreet.com, The San Francisco Chronicle, Fox Business and more.
I have been following your blog and would like our entities to partner through content. I was thinking of an agreement where we could syndicate your content in exchange for a widget placement.
Please do let me know your thoughts. I look forward to hearing back from you soon.
So here's the question, Is syndication good or bad? I've heard google does not like duplicated content. But, the cited retail outlets look credible. What do you think?

Benzinga is regularly listed in Google financial news; I would say go for it. Gets you good exposure.

Barb, I think I am a little slow today (sorry). I don't really get what they are offering. Will they syndicate your content in Yahoo/Thestreet websites? I mean will you post show up on their site or are they syndicating posts from all those sites to bezinga.com? If it is the latter, I don't think this is any different than MGID right?
If it is the former, then it might be a good partnership to have. Can you ask them a sample of bloggers who use their service? So that you can see whether they have their widget. I have seen GRS and TSD content syndicated at a lot of places, but they don't have any badges. My philosophy is if they really want your content, they don't have to really ask you (as long as they are not posting the whole post and just the link) nor should they require you to display a widget. Just my thought..
Ask who else does this, look at their site and then decide…

Our very own Mark from buylikebuffett.com is on Benzinga!
Everytime I search for news related to some stock, Google links to Benzinga. So I do know Google favors Benzinga a lot (to the point of being annoying!).

My two cents would be that in order to use your content, you shouldn't have to put a banner on your site – they can just use it.

I went and check BuyLikeBuffett specifically to find it, can't find one. If they syndicate him without requiring him to display a widget, that is what I am talking about… it is same as GRS or TSD. They shouldn't require you to display something in return if they really just want to show the title of your post…

Looks like he actually writes for Benzinga –
Mark Riddix is the founder of New Horizons Financial Management, an investment management company. Mark also contributes investing and personal finance tips to Money Crashers, one of the best personal finance blogs. He writes a weekly column for Benzinga every Wednesday
Moneycone, I am not saying Benzinga is bad. All I am saying is they shouldn't be forcing anyone to display their widget if all they are looking for is to syndicate the blogs' content.

I'm not disagreeing with you Suba!
I too don't know what the deal with Benzinga is, but I do know it is a pretty popular site. Yes, if they require a widget to be placed with nothing in return, that's a bad deal.
But if they syndicate your content, you get a wider exposure at the cost of article duplication. And in most likelihood your duplicated content would rank higher than the original.

Wow-Thanks for weighing in. Lots to digest. Suba, I'm not totally certain what they are asking for! Didn't want to waste much time if it was junk!

Can they syndicate a truncated version where they have to click through to your site to get the entire post?

Hasn't MSN Money syndicated a few of us or republished our articles with no such requirements for widgets?
I'm wondering if this "we'll syndicate you in exchange for a widget placement" is the new "I'll write a guest post on your site that links to this place that's paying me." There are lots of places that syndicate articles but don't require widgets. If they like your content enough I feel like it wouldn't be a requirement. But then, what do I know?

I thinks that's what they are doing. I'm discussing it with them and trying to figure it all out. I'll let you know what the deal is when I get it all straight!! (There is too much to do and too little time :) )

Bezinga does get excellent search engine rankings in Google news. The question is, though, how many of your blog pieces are intended for immediate consumption? I mean, most financial advice isn't "yo, you have to do this right now" so I don't know how much traffic it would bring.
If anything, it might be worth trying out for a week or two, just to see. I wouldn't put their widget on your site, though, that's a crock.

Wow. If I ever get an email that I woudl like a second opinion on, I'm most definitely posting in these forums! Suba and MoneyCone, you are an amazing help.
I think I'm going to agree with the masses on this one. The synication sounds awesome, but the widget doesn't seem to be much consolation. If it does drive in a lot of traffic though, I would definitely consider the widget.

Barbara:
I think it is a personal decision. The other day, however, I read a really great post that I think sheds some light on this situation. It is called: "The dangle: The illusory promise of content farms." It discusses how these "for-profit" companies "dangle" exposure, etc., in order to get you to give them exposure for free. In that authors view, it generally does not help your blog. I have read a few pieces like that over the last few months, so I don't think I would personally do it. That widget in particular cannot in my opinion bring you any traffic, that is for sure.
