After Thursday's update, or as some call it, smackdown, sites that have been penalized are scrambling to get rid of toxic links. This morning, I got an email from someone asking me to take a link to their website down because it came to their attention that it may have been acquired against Google's guidelines and also that the site was penalized by Google so it would be in my best interest to remove it.
I was intrigued because I didn't have a clue what he was talking about. So I looked, sure enough there was a link to their site, but it wasn't a paid link. I knew there wasn't going to be a paid link there. It was a related post added through Zemanta with content that was informative and relevant to my post, the two key factors why I picked it for my related posts in the first place!
Now if Google ever decides that the Zemanta platform is against their guidelines, I'll be in big trouble. :)
Just thought I'd share a fun little story of how some companies are now even asking for free, organically placed links to be removed.
Side question: the linked post is still informative and relevant. It seems a shame to just remove it. Can I get away with just nofollowing it?

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

I would think no follow would be good enough. Google just doesn't want you to pass page rank. However, if they asked you to remove it, you might be better just taking it down.

Is Zemanta nofollow? The problem is when the links are followed (and paid).
I got a request last week to remove a link. Problem was they got the site wrong. They sent it to me instead of the actual site they were looking for.

By default, Zemanta is not nofollow, but the setting can be changed. I haven't, because it's all or none. You can't tell them to nofollow just the related posts but not the in-line links.

Zemanta – blech. They also embed a tiny invisible image that links to their site. You can only see it via html. I got rid of the plugin and spent far too much time deleting all the html code links to their site. I use photodropper now instead.

I also use photodropper. We are fairly happy with it.

I got rid of Zemanta for the exact same reason. Too close to spam linking.
