Given what has been happening across the blogosphere, I wrote a post about how to prevent people from stealing your content, and what you can do if someone does steal it.
Please check it out and promote. I think this problem is getting worse, and we need to get the word out to be vigilent.

Thanks!

Nice article. Very detailed. I hope that I'll never have to read it again (for reference that is)! :)

Great article! I've had to deal with this quite a bit. It is such a hassle to have to deal with. Unfortunately it is getting worse and I don't anticipate it getting any better.

I apologize as this response has nothing to do with the topic (but I did read your article and it was excellent!). But I am a little desperate here and this was the only place I was being permitted to post. Yakezie won't let me log in. Well, it lets me but then it says I am not logged in. ??? And it will only show me as logged in on random topics, and not on others or on the main page. Is anyone else having this trouble? I have experienced now on a Mac and on a PC using two different internet providers. HELP!

I don't mind legit reuse of content but I updated my CC license in order to better protect myself down the road.
I also use the ©Feed plugin which lets you search by a unique ID — this can help you identify places where posts were copied that the other methods might miss.
Thanks for sharing the article with us!

As an aside, what happened to the login button? I always have to login through the forums now.

This is getting frustrating. I still am not being seen as 'logged in' on about half the posts here. And there are topics I want to comment on! Grrr….. And on top of that, Blogger is acting up, too. Maybe today just needs to be a blog-free day for me – though the Yakezie problems have been going on more than a day so I am not sure how much good ignoring it today will do me! :)

Part of the biggest problem I've noticed is that even if you do DMCA remove requests for a lot of these sites, nothing happens because a lot of them are based overseas, and a lot of the newer ones aren't using adsense – so you can't report them to google for that. Yes, google will remove them from search rankings if you report specific posts, but reporting those posts every day does get tedious. I foresee this becoming a bigger issue from overseas content mills and thieves, unless and until google and other search engines can better identify the copied content and remove it or penalize it.

Sharing my experience.
I wrote a post on Extreme Couponing which took me about a week to research and compile. When I did a Google search I found no less than 10 different sites with my exact post copied verbatim. I had been scraped! Anyway I filled out a DMCA request with Google about a week ago expecting nothing to happen.
Today all except one have removed the articles since they had Adsense blocks and the one without is being delisted from search. I typically wouldn't care, but the problem for me was that one article ranked right under mine and on Yahoo one actually ranked right before mine. That particular article was created with the purpose of targeting for keywords and making some money which it is doing. Others, I care much less about.
If you need the link here it is.

Sandy, that's a great outcome. It's encouraging that Google has been so responsive in this case.

Google is great if the thief has AdSense on their site. If they don't, you can go through the host!

That's great to hear that they responded so quickly!
Did Google require that they remove just that one post or the entire site that did the plagiarism?

Going through the host is best but a lot of these scraper sites are now out of the country with some not too reputable hosting companies and they don't always respond, so that doesn't always work.
- Google requires them to remove the stolen content, not the entire site if they have Adsense.
- If the site does not have Adsense and does not voluntarily remove the stolen content within 2 days of notification, the entire site is delisted from search.
- If the site is a Blogger site, they also have to remove the offending content of the site gets shut down
Don't despair folks, Google is getting better.
