I am relatively new to the concept of carnivals (I was just posted in my first one last week – thanks Money Cactus!). I have since discovered that there are many financial carnivals. I want to make sure that I am following the appropriate protocol so I have a quick question. Can you submit the same blog article to multiple carnivals? The Carnival of Personal Finance specifically says to only submit an entry that has not been published or submitted to other carnivals. However, I haven't seen this restriction on other carnival submission forms. Is it just common knowledge that you shouldn't do this or is it different for different carnivals?

The Blog Carnival site, or the individual carnival site, should have instructions. I think most allow multiple subs though.
I've seen some people put together spreadsheets of the carnival, the link, what it is, and what the requirements are. Not a bad idea.

Not trying to sell you anything…but Melissa @ Mom's Plans does carnival submissions for a very fair price if you didnt feel like handling it yourself. It's definitely one of those things I have tried to do over and over myself, but im tired of reading guidelines and typing out descriptions and submitting…now I know Im getting 5 quality links everytime Melissa submits for me each week. Might want to email and check her services out.

Carnival etiquette can be a tricky thing when you are first starting out. Like Glen said, the carnival's site is the standard place to go. I help several bloggers with submitting to carnivals and have learned the in's and out's through doing so. It is a great way to build up links to your site while also increasing referral traffic. If you ever have any questions, feel free to email me your questions. I'm always happy to help.

Like Pam, I am fairly new to the concept of carnivals. I have a follow-up carnival question: Once you are featured and linked within a carnival, they usually require you to link back to that carnival from your blog. How do you know that you've been featured in a Carnival? Say I submit to several carnivals, but don't know who is hosting them or when they are being run. So far, I've not received any e-mails telling me that I have been featured. How then do you find out without physically searching for and reading through each and every carnival?

Hi, Matt. Most will send you an e-mail letting you know you have been featured. If you don't get that, the other alternative is to look for a comment (trackback) on your site or just go to blogcarnival.com and look for the link to the most recent edition. Then you will have to manually check for your post.

I usually jot down the carnival which I've submitted to, and then check off if I've been included and add another check mark when I've linked back in one of my roundups. Keeps me on track to make sure I don't miss anything.

When I get an email saying I've been included in a carnival I tag it and then immediately tweet it out. Then I can go back through my tags when I do a post to thank them for including me. I'm working on getting a spreadsheet together where I can enter them all in when I get the email, but I've been procrastinating with that.

I'm having trouble with getting Blogger to display my backlings, which is making this difficult for me. I don't even remember which posts I submitted to which carnival's. I'm going to have to come up with a better system. Trying to not make this too complicated. If my Blogger backlinks display would work, it would make this simple to see who linked to my posts. I've already wasted 3+ hours trying to resolve my issue.

Jumping into this a little late, but as runners of the TotallyMoney Blog Carnival, we prefer it if the post has only been submitted to our carnival (and not the others), but we're certainly not militant about it! And, of course, we completely understand that keeping tabs on the articles that you submit to various carnivals is tricky at the best of times.
Incidentally a cheeky plug for the new Blog Carnival HQ courtesy of Tom (Canadian Personal Finance) http://blogcarnivalhq.com/. Makes submitting articles a lot more user friendly, in my opinion!

If you can spare a few bucks, outsource Carnivals to someone like Corey. It's not worth your headache.

@Money Beagle – I know it is inevitable that I will one day switch to Wordpress. Don't quite want to leave my comfort zone in Blogger yet, as I know it will take a lot of time to learn new things, play with layouts, and get everything transferred over.
@Harri – I've been using Blog Carnival HQ! You're right, it is an excellent site for submitting. But, I can't find who is hosting each carnival anywhere in the submission form or the receipt e-mail they send. I've not yet received e-mails from any of the hosts letting me know that I have been included, and I know I've been included in at least a few. I even checked my spam folder.
@Kevin & Miss T – Eventually I will outsource things like carnival submissions, but for now I want to do everything on my own just so I have a complete understanding. One question about outsourcing to somebody like Corey or Melissa: how do you know which Carnival's they've submitted to for you? Do they send you some sort of receipt e-mail?
I feel like I've taken over this thread as the main questioner. I didn't even start this one!!
