Hi all,
Did Yakezie forums accidentally turn into the Food Network? Let me explain. I'm a big fan of Chipotle. One day, it was packed like sardines. I needed food so I kept going. I ran into Qboda. Same deal right? Burritos, fresh meat, toppings, it's the same, right? WRONG! There was no taste at all. It almost felt like chewing through cardboard. I guess that's why Chipotle stock is on fire.
My point? What is the secret sauce that makes one personal finance blog more successful, popular than the other ala Chipotle vs Qboda?

I really do read a lot of blogs, and as far as what keeps me going back to some more than others is content, tone, and attitude. There are only so many PF topics that can be covered for the first time, so what interests me is how people put a different spin on things. I don't want to read lists, I want to read personal experiences and thoughts. I don't want to hear that I should do something, I want to be educated about the benefits and pitfalls about something that may be new to me. I want to hear attitude, not some monotone put-me-to-sleep voice.
Now as the blogger, I try to take what I want to read, and implement it as best I can in my own writing, but on this side the focus is on the "you", rather than the "me" as it is when I'm the reader. But enough of that, you made me hungry, I'm going to grab some food

My reader is going to explode one day if I don't quit subscribing to more blogs. That said, there are some that I look forward to more than others. The writing is engaging, the person's story interests me, and I value their opinions about more than just finances. I'd rather read more personal posts with some financial stuff sprinkled in, but I know some people are the direct opposite.
Semi-related confession: I've never eaten at Chipotle OR Qdoba because there aren't any close to here. But there is a Salsarita's Fresh Cantina, which I'm pretty sure is the same thing. I LOVE THAT PLACE! (Note to self: find out if there is a Chipotle in Schaumburg before FINCON11.)

Actually I like Qdoba better than Chipotle lol. Though both are quite good! I think the writing style is a big difference. Some people provide large thorough 1,000+ word articles, some provide 500 word articles that are a bit more succint, and others write daily tips. Also. the range of topics is probably another huge difference. I write about anything and everthing personal finance as it relates to my personal experiences. Buy like Buffet writes about stocks. Some write about their travels, other write about coupon deals and dining out. There are so many different aspects that seperate PF blogs.

Hey Eric,
Content, tone, and attitude with a new spin on things. Nice way to sum it up. I was kind of thinking the same thing. How many ways can you write about credit cards, savings, retirement? The special sauce is your personal experience and flavor! Damm I'm getting hungry, too!

Hi Andrea,
I understand what you're saying about your reader exploding. There are so many great blogs out there. I seem to be going the opposite these days. There's sooo many. I don't even know where to start anymore! I wonder if it would be beneficial if we had a way to sub-classify personal finance blogs. Just taking what you said, personal story type or research. I tend to gravitate to the personal story ones and I also write that way as well. Hmm, might have to mull that one over the weekend. Nothing against anyone's writing style, but I sometimes feel overwhelmed. I have a limited time to catch up on blogs. Rather than go through my favorite hundred blogs, perhaps I can catch up on my favorite 20 personal story ones. Or if time permits, I can hit my favorite 20 research ones.
On the other note, I hope you find a Chipotle at Fin Con. They're sprouting up all over the place!

Hey Justin,
Really? Perhaps I needed to add more sauces? I thought it was too bland for me.
Great point. Writing style is key. I guess there are niches within personal finance. Maybe I just wanted an excuse to talk about burritos!

"How to" and "Why" articles are what interest me. There are still a lot of ways that a "How to" and "Why" article won't interest me. If it's an article on "How to" and it never explains "how to," and instead focuses on "what," I'm unlikely to bother reading it. Same thing goes for "How to" articles that just explain back to me my own thought process. eHow is a great example of a site that does this A TON.

Thanks for chiming in JT. So would you say eHOW is a good example of what not to do?

What a great question. It has honestly made me think. I guess for me I like blogs that give me a way to do something- a step by step. I also like blogs that take a risk and write about something controversial. I like to be inspired by the out of ordinary. I also like blogs that I can relate to or suggest things that are relevant to my life.

I'm with you Eric… my preference is to learn, not simply to be entertained by personal stories. While I enjoy the personal interaction, my time is limited so I want something I can apply that will make me more successful in my investment practices.
MMmmmm… Chipotle. Great Food… Great Stock.

Who says that you can't teach something while being entertaining? My blog is a little schizophrenic because I tell personal stories with a lesson, I report on current financial news, I do in depth researched articles, and yes, occasionally I bitch and moan and go off the reservation.
The thing about the blog is that it had to be engaging, no matter what your writing style is. Some people need that "how to" and some people need to be entertained and get to the conclusion in a roundabout away. Who says that we have to be one thing?
But then again, maybe I just need Ritalin. And while I'm so-so on both Qdoba and Chipotle, I'm all over Baja Fresh. So underrated and the flavor that you're missing Buck is all over Baja Fresh.

Never heard of Qboda before. I'll remember to keep walking if I do ever come across one!
I think writing style is a big one. Ease of navigation, site speed, type of topics factor in a lot too.

Hi Doctor Spock,
Good point about limited time. I like to learn as well, but I also value the fun and entertaining side of things. Agree with you on CMG's food and stock.

Hi Sandy,
I'm a little schizo, too. Perhaps I should break things out like that, personal stories, research, schizo? Baja Fresh is yummy, too. Very similar to La Salsa. Man, I'm getting hungry!

I would like to think I do this at least somewhat. I am not a writer or a blogger by trade so I am still on that learning curve. I would like to think though that those who do read my blog get something out of it.

I'm with Sandy, my blog is pretty all over the place. But, hey, I have fun with it, so it's ok.
My Google Reader is overflowing with blogs but the ones I like the best are ones that challenge me to push a little further with my knowledge, habits, or skills. I also like the blogs that have content that's different. It's why I like Early Retirement Extreme. I'm also enjoying a lot of investing blogs recently.
I'm not sure if I'd want to read my own blog. Some of my posts recently have been of the "how to save on XYZ" style which normally make my eyes glaze over since it's all rehashed material. But the reason we've seen it so much is because it's easy to write and it's easy to write because we've seen it etc etc. So I'm cutting myself some slack here but I think repetitive content is here to stay on many blogs which is why I appreciate the exceptions so much. Sometimes I think my blog might be better if I didn't read any other PF blogs.
