Commenting Ease vs. Spam Filters

So I've been making my rounds around the Yakezie network for Build Your Blog month, and I have a question to ask for commentors: how do you feel about the spam filters such as Captcha, Verification (Enter first and third out of 6 letters…), and Check Here.

I find both Captcha and Verification to be very annoying.  I don't mind the Check Here to prove you're not a spammer box.

If you have these on your site, do you find them useful?  I currently use nothing more than Akismet, and I get maybe 10 spam a day.  I don't mind clearing my spam queue to keep my site comment friendly.

I use the check box.  It's awesome!  Stops 100% of the spam, and I don't use Askimet.

I use the Akismet, Conditional Captcha combo.  Only have to fill in the captcha if Adsense marks it as spam.

I see that many bloggers have Captcha or Akismet, but I find them annoying and haven't yet set them up on my site. If, for whatever reason, you type the code in wrong, your entire comment is wasted! I've had this happen a few times and it makes me kind of upset. I decided that for now, I'd rather filter through spam myself than have my readers take this extra step to comment.

I hate Captcha!  So many times I've subbed a comment and didn't realize it wen to another page for authentication.  Grr.

I use Akismet and WP Spamfree.  Not perfect but better than getting hundreds of spam comments going through.

What's the name of the plugin for the check box?

I hate, hate, HATE them.  Especially the ones with the letters.

And for you Blogger folks, you can turn that feature off.  Blogger has excellent spam detection, and I have had no trouble with spam getting through even with that letter jumble thing turned off.

I'd much rather have to enter a captcha than go automatically into the spam without any notification whatsoever and then have to bother the site owner to get me out.

So, what I do is I run Typepad Antispam (you can use Akismet if you prefer) + Conditional Captcha. Throw the real spammers in the spam while letting the legit commentators post even if they've been falsely tagged by an overly aggressive Akismet! It's the best combination; other alternatives I've seen is "check this box to confirm I am NOT a spammer" which are also preferable to Akismet. :)

As a commenter, I like the "Check this Box" more than conditional captcha because it is less work!

Hi Kay Lynn, When you get the name of that CHECK-BOX plugin I would love to know it too. I'm being crushed by spam, especially this week for some reason? Thanks, Hunter.

I don't mind a CAPTCHA for first time comments but for every single comment it can be annoying.

I do the exact same thing. Only people that Akismet think are spammers have to CAPTCHA.
