I've only been blogging for about 3 months but I'm loving it. I don't make money off it and am in no rush. But I would like to build traffic to have more discussion on my blog.
A while back I went through a period where I was commenting on other blogs. Not just commenting for the heck of it but to really help the conversation. And sometimes I would put links to similar posts (with a slight twist) that I'd written that I felt would help readers.
But then I read a few the comment policies of a few sites and realized that some might find that rude. I'm sorry if this is a stupid newbie question, but am I damaging people's blogs by doing that?
Thanks!

I made the same mistake when I first started. Don't feel bad. Its perfectly normal to want to link to your own blog.
You definitely are not damaging anyone's blog by doing it, at worst it is just a bit annoying.

Thanks Michael. Glad to know I'm not damaging their blogs.
But I'm still kind of confused. Why is it a mistake and why would they find it annoying? Just speaking for myself, if someone puts a link in their comment that helps my readers, I would like it because I want my readers to grow and learn.
Again, sorry if this is really basic.
Thanks!

Often when I get a comment on my blog with a link, it is spam. Its terribly frustrating to write an article about one subject, but then have a link to "make hundreds online from home".
Obviously, that is not what you are doing, but the line between spam/promoting and contributing to the discussion can get a little blurry when it is a link to your site.

Bloggers could find this annoying if they don't know who you are. If you comment on a blog out of the blue and have a link in your comment, the blog owner is going to think your comment is spam. I can't count how many spam comments I get a day and although a lot of them are clearly gobbledigook, some spam comments sound like real people. And if I'm ever in doubt, I treat it as spam as do a lot of bloggers.

I would comment on a blog at least a few times before inserting a link. After hundreds of comments I rarely do so, unless I have a totally different opinion on the post and writing it down is too long so I link to the post where I do so.
If you wrote on 5 ways to save on groceries and I wrote about it too then my link is not bringing any value.
