I'm starting to get a very small trickle of comments to my blog posts. Sure, I would love to get a bunch of them for a single post, but a small trickle is better than zero. I spent the last year and a half writing weekly posts, and getting no comments at all. This is majorly my fault, because I hadn't commented on posts of other bloggers. This was partially due to laziness, and not having built up a network with other bloggers. But now, I get it. I'm starting to comment, which I believe is mainly the reason I'm starting to see a small number of comments to my posts.
However, I would love to know how long it took most of you, before you went from zero to multiple comments to your blog posts, and what you did to get 10 – 20 comments yourself. I could sure use some encouragement. Thanks all.

When I was at the height of participation and commenting on others blogs, I probably received about half of what I gave out. Now almost any article I write (excluding guest posts) I receive between 10 and 20 comments. Most of that just comes with time, a year for me. Though I know a few others with blogs younger than mine, and receiving triple the comments.

That's interesting. I had a feeling that it was a matter of the time factor. Thanks for sharing that.

I'm getting anywhere from 10-20 comments on most of my posts and that is totally due to commenting on other blogs and making friends here at Yakezie. The blog is just 6 weeks young. Give and ye shall receive :)
I'm not sure how others do it, but I like to add my commenters blogs to a dedicated list in my feed reader and they get priority in my commenting schedule.

Here's some techniques for getting more comments:

I think a lot of it comes down to what you're writing about as well, and if your readers feel compelled to comment on something.

As others have said, just get really active on other blogs and they will likely comment back. With me it wasn't really a time issue, it was more about effort I put forth. People who ignore their commenters often don't get those people coming back much.

@Glencap. Yep, you definitely have to give before you can receive. I used to comment on about 15-20 sites every day, and would receive about 25-40% in return. After a while, I got so busy with projects that I created for myself that I just wasn't able to comment on all those sites anymore.
The comments went down initially on my site, but after a while, I realized that I didn't necessarily need to make those 15-20 comments a day anymore. I built up a network of loyal readers and they were going to read my stuff whether I commented on another site or not! At this point, I have 760 subscribers and don't really have to worry about comments anymore. All I need to focus on now is the quality of each one of my posts. Best of luck to you!

Based on the feedback that I've received so far, it pretty much comes down to how often you comment on other blogs. The law of large numbers is a big factor. If I comment on 20 sites, I can expect a roughly a 25-40% response return. That's about 5 – 8 return comments. Needless to say, quality posts make a big difference, as well. So, I've got my work cut out for me. Thanks so much everyone.

Your blog is 6 weeks young. That's pretty incredible. You must have worked your butt off everyday for it to be that successful so quickly. Congratulations! I need to follow your example. Thanks for your help.

Yes, I've heard that effort matters a great deal, and responding to commenters. Thanks so much.

You've done a lot of work to get all of those incoming comments. Your response was definitely an eye-opener for me. Thank you for your feedback.

Being active in other blogs is definitely helpful. I usually get between 30 and 50 comments on my posts a day and I've been blogging since August of 2011.

I used to get anywhere between 7-15 comments on each post when I wasn't very active in the PF community, but since joining Yakezie and making a HUGE effort to comment on other's posts, be active in the blogosphere, tweet, etc, I've been getting anywhere from 25-50 depending on the post.
I think the key is to definitely comment on others blogs!

Also remember to respond to comments on your blog and allow others to subscribe to comments. That way if a good conversation gets going, you could get some to come back and participate.

Wow! You've been blogging for just a short while, and you're already getting so many comments per post. I'll definitely cut a page out of your playbook.

Thanks Daisy. I've noticed that you get that many comments. In fact, seeing this on your blog is what prompted me to ask the question to begin with. Thank you for your help.

Thanks, LaTisha. That's a great point. I wasn't thinking about it from that angle. I solely looked at it as a way of showing consideration to others for taking the time to stop by, and leave comments. A good conversation is great for bloggers, because it helps their network and improve traffic to their blogs. Thanks for pointing that out.

Maybe so. But, I have to say that I was a bit surprised in the beginning to read your blog bio, and find out that you're still in your 20s. I would've incorrectly guessed that you were much older, because you've done so much in your young life. And, you're still going strong. God bless you!
