Mark (Buy like Buffett) and I think Frugal Confessions as well mentioned contacting advertisers directly for private ads. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for how to go about doing this?
Where would I even start? I have a 4 month goal that I'm trying to meet and I want to get pretty aggressive about it. (That's partly the reason I'e been a little inactive lately: new job, working on a new niche site and products for the current blog.)
I already have an outline for an "Advertise Here" page that gives the major details behind traffic and such. But is there something I'm missing?

It might be time to reach out to some advertisers. Search for a few of your targeted keywords within Google and see what comes up on Page 3 and beyond. These are the sites that aren't getting much traffic from Google and would be willing to pay for it.
Also, you could take notice of who's paying for those Adsense links on your site. If you find their contact info, sometimes they're willing to work with you directly as well.
Focus on your strengths (most likely your Alexa Rank and perhaps subscribers or visitors per month) and let them know that you are the next up-and-coming website. Make them think they're getting you cheap with a 6 month agreement just before your site explodes (which it may very well do).
Hope this helps.

Contacting advertisers is a topic that I wish was addressed a little more in "how to" blogging books. It seems like the books always focus on building your site with content, etc, but only talk about advertising with affiliate links and Adsense.
It's interesting that they don't address the source of the major income, direct ads with advertisers….

I work with advertisers on giveaways on my blog. When I have a nice relationship with the advertiser or their product did particularly well on a giveaway, I ask them about advertising. I have contacted a few, but so far it has only panned out with one.
