I've started to get a lot of SPAM comments recently from businesses just looking for links.

Has any one tried/had success emailing them at the email address provided in the comment field to say that you couldn't approve their comment but to see if they would be interested in advertising?

Just was curious if I am wasting my time doing this….haha

Jacob – I've never tried that or even though of that. However, that's really good thinking – very cool. Maybe you should think about marketing as opposed to what you might be otherwise studying at the moment:)

I have got 2 good leads so far, but these folks tend to be in the lowest scale of low ballers. Last week I was offered $5 for a sidebar link :) def. worth an email…

I don't think it's worth it unless you are pricing links really cheaply.

Most likely, spammers won't be willing to pay much for a link. That's why they spam instead of dealing directly with a site. I guess it doesn't hurt to try though.

Honestly, with the volume of spam out there I think you can find much better ways to work on monetiztion.

Thanks for everyone's input. Very interesting. I think I'll just give it a try….Being in graduate school, my time is only worth about $1 per hour anyway! haha

I was trying to do this, thought I had a really good lead (about $500) but after wasting a bunch of time explaining things the advertiser finally looked at our metrics (I assume) and said our traffic and PR were too low – not interested.  But asked (again) if I owned other sites (had already said no) – specifically one with 135,000 subscribers.  "We may be interested in that site".  Uh huh.  Delete.

I think this is a great idea but I do have concerns about the time investment vs the payment received. Usually these are low ballers and can't pay much. It might still be worth a try though.

Ha! That beats an offer I got yesterday: A paid post & link for $150 for 12 months. Not gonna happen when other advertisers are offering 4X that!

What I meant is – create a standard template email. Just send that to those folks, takes 2 mins. So it is worth an email, but not worth more than 2 mins of your time…

That's what I do.  I send out the same form mail to everyone who links to a business site when leaving a comment.

Here's a template for the email I copy/paste to all of them. Let me know what you all think and feel free to use it if you like.

Hi ShareTipsLive,

I was unable to approve your comment because it is to a business
looking for links.

However, would you be interested in advertising on my site? If
so, we can discuss the details.

Thanks,

Jacob

I agree with Miss T. The time investment is not worth the potential reward because spammers are not likely to pay much for a link.

Kevin, try an email like what Jacob had. Here is my template -

Hello Crazy-commodity-guy

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Unfortunately, I have a policy of not allowing business links in the comments section. I will leave the comment as it is, without link. If you would like to have a link on my website, either within the post or on the sidebar, I will be happy to discuss the rates with you. Broke Professionals has a moz rank of 4.2, Alexa 150000 and gets over 15000 page view a month. I am sure it will be a mutually beneficial relationship. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks,

Suba
