Hello!

I think something you should add (and I am not techy in the LEAST, but have thought about doing this myself) is a random tip generator at the top of your blog. You can feed it with these tips, and eventually it will have 365 of them rotating around!

Awesome idea!

Hi Amanda – LOVE THIS IDEA!

Any idea where I can get a random tip generator?

The only thing I think might be "a bit much" about it would be if I was an email subscriber (I'm not – RSS) and I was getting 9 emails from you a week. I would definitely find that to be a bit much!

I think the tips are a fantastic idea. I don't always agree 100% with all of them or find all of them to be useful, but I really like what you are building. I doubt there will be anybody else out ther with a full 365 item list on sustainability. That is bound to garner you a lot of traffic going forward be it from searches engines, link bait, or social sites.

Once you complete it, I think you should should rally your fellow Yakezie members and we can submit it to all the social bookmarking and news sites like Digg, Reddit, Delicious, and StumbleUpon and all thumb it up for you. I think if it gains traction, from a group of us then it could be really popular for you.

Thanks guys!

That's the part I don't know–where to find such a thing. Get Rich Slowly had one at the top of his website for awhile, but I just checked, and it is no longer there.

When/if you do find out about one, can you please email me? I think I'd still like to incorporate one on my own website. '

Thanks!

Amanda, I saw the thread here and did a bit of searching. UPDATE: The site I mentioned was quite old and contained mostly broken links. I found another plugin that works as a widget. It comes with 365 quotes and you can customize it yourself.

WORD OF WARNING: Before you attempt to customize the file with the quotations, be certain to make a backup copy of the file, and be sure that you know how to FTP the backup copy back to your server.  If you get even one quotation mark or even a space incorrect, it can crash your entire blog.

That said, the plugin is pretty simple to install and the quotations can be changed easily. I've installed it at my site for a short time if anyone would like to have a look. It is currently on the top left menu bar on my blog and the title is Wordpress Quotes.

The plugin is:

[This is the original information I posted earlier, but I found most links to be broken... I found a site which is discussing random all sorts of things, "quotations" included which sounds like what you are looking for.  See if one of the plugins mentioned would suit your purposes:

I've been trying to find something to do some random posts display but everything seems to be in the sidebar widget area and I haven't actually been able to get any of the plugins i've installed to work.

Just checked out your blog. I think one tip a day is a great idea!

SPF – what are you trying to accomplish exactly?  If you have the
php-Exec plugin which allows you to insert PHP code in to any post,
page, or widget (my favorite plugin), a few lines of php could
accomplish what you are after.  When adding php you need to use the HTML
editor instead of the WYSIWYG editor.

So, if you want a
page that displays a randomly selected post of the 365 tips, I would do
something like this.  Have each of those 365 posts in a specific
category and then create a new page, say `Random Tip` and add something
like the below to that pages content.  Replace the X in cat=X with the correct category number.  Also, I am making this up and it is completley untested, but should be functional.

<?php

query_posts('posts_per_page=1&cat=X&orderby=rand');

while (have_posts()) : the_post();

echo '<h2>';

the_title();

echo '</h2>';

the_content();

endwhile;

wp_reset_query();

?>

I give up on trying to format it nicely in this editor here..  but you get the idea.  Grab a random post, display its title & content.

Hi Jaymus – the idea was actually Amanda's.  It would be great to be able to have revolving tip at the top of the home page.  I think i'd need to go to the Atahualpa help forum to figure out how to edit the header area then add some sort of code/script like you are suggesting.

I truly like the idea.

If I may give you one piece of advice; try to focus on a specific keyword per tips. Since you are writing around 100 words, key word concentration will be pretty high and it should help you getting more attention from Google ;-)

For example, a while ago I wrote a 100 word article on Primerica First IPO. I targetted Primerica IPO as keywords and my post was rank #2 on Google for a week (I was ranking better than Bloomberg and Wall Street Journal ;-) ).

keep it up! your motivation will definitely bring something ;-)

Oh… if you want to guest post on a Ethic Dividend stock on The Dividend Guy Blog, i would be more than happy to publish your post ;-)

cheers,

Mike

Thanks Mike.  I have tried to work on the keywords using Google AdWords as a tool.  It is hard tho as Mrs. SPF writes 5 of 7 tips and I haven't taught her how to research the keywords.  This means I go in afterward and edit a lot.  Also, a lot of our keywords aren't that popular or unique so we don't get a ton of SE juice.

I'll letcha know about the Dividend Guy Blog.  I loved the SRI series (and plan to write my own) but perhaps I could write a piece on some of the "green" or "SR" stiocks that have drawn my attention.  I worry about getting laughed out of your blog tho as i'm still a noob at investing myself and am likely looking at the wrong things, or in the wrong light!

you can always try to be more general if you don't want to get hit by some readers. I totally understand your point ;-D
