Hi Guys,

Had a couple quick questions on how to do a few things in wordpress:

1. How do you post  a video right into your blog (not just the link)? Seems like every time I try to post one, just the link from Youtube shows up. I seem some of your blogs and videos posted from Youtube and it looks really great.

2. Spam? Is there a widget to download to cut down on comment spam? I would try to avoid the whole "Type in this, so you are not deemed as a Robot" or is that the simplest way to go?

3. In dashboard in WP, it shows 140/142 comments approved? Yet I check and they are all approved. Also when you delete a spam comment, where does it go? Does the trash box need to be cleared? Where can you view it?

Thanks so much.

I know most of these questions are boring, but got to learn somehow.

1.  I don't know.
2.  I use Akismet coupled with Conditional Captcha…if Akismet tries to eat somebody, they can save their comment with Conditional Captcha.  If Akismet doesn't try to eat them, they never have to enter that silly code.  :-)
3.  There is a "Pending" queue that needs to have comments approved once you rescue them from spam.

Make sure you are pulling int he embed code for the video not just the link.

Or you could use Viper's Video Quicktags plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/pl…..quicktags/

Hope this helps.

James/Crystal

Thanks for the suggestions.

Not sure how to pull the embed code. I know I was just copying the link.

Do you use Viper's Quicktags?

Has anyone tried to download the video with something like Youtube Downloader?

Thanks!

If you are on YouTube, there should be an "embed" button to the right of the "share" button. If you are on another site that has a video, the embed option is usually included under "share". Just paste that code into the HTML editor in WP.

I hope that helps.

The embed code button

Once you click it the code will pop up.  Just copy and paste it into your site.  You can even adjust the size of the video by changing the height and width parameters.  Just make sure they match at the beginning and the end.

#2  I use Askimet and G.A.S.P.

I just discovered GASP on the weekend – instead of a barely readable word it shows a simple check box which the poster has to click to prove they are human.  It was worked very well for us thus far and I really like that the read doesn't have to decipher some jibberish messed up looking word.

Just in case it wasn't clear, when you embed a video from say Youtube, make sure you paste it under HTML.

Trash will typically clear itself after 30 days. You can clear it yourself by clicking remove.

How much spam do you guys get per day?  I have Akismet installed and it has cought 100% of the spam.  unfortunatley, it has had a few false positives along theway to, so i make sure to check the spam daily and either delete permanently or click the "not spam".  it is my understanding that Akismet is to get better over time with use.

My blog is still quite new, but I only get a few spam comments each day and to be honest I don't think it even started until I installed CommentLuv.

 Hey Crystal!

I haven't tried the Conditional Captch because I don't like putting in a code myself, but you're saying that only people who would end up in spam have to put in a captcha code? If that is the case, I will definitely install. Thanks for your time.

Bump.

This is an excellent option for those who dislike entering codes, trying to read those messed up words etc etc.  A simple check box.

You can check it out on my site – just go to any article's comments and you'll see the beauty in it's simplicity.

That's correct. It will only show up if Akismet thinks that they are spam. If they aren't classified as spam, they will never see the captcha. I think it's great since they have a chance to save themselves from spam jail.

Amanda, yes, Khaleef explained it well.  It only pops up if Akismet is about to eat them.  And it is a really easy to read code that asks for you to enter 2 digits of it (either first two or 4th and 6th or whatever) – it is really easy to read.

Thanks for mentioning Conditional Captcha! It's a great plugin and I would like to encourage everyone to use it. There are a couple of huge blogs out there using Akismet, and I am effectively barred from commenting on their site as they are too busy to check their email and unspam me, yet they allow some real spam to go through. The problem wouldn't exist if they used Conditional Captcha. :)

Still going to give GASP its props.

I installed GASP on Saturday.

Since then my SPAM has been pingbacks mostly and my "trash", which used to get 50 or so msgs a day, now gets none.

The bots don't even seem to bother with my pages that have check boxes instead of captcha.

Guys thanks for sharing your inputs.

It sure has helped me.

I decided to go with Aksimet & Conditional Captcha!

We'll see if I stick with the Conditional Captcha, but its very simplified.

Glad to see this post is also helping others!
