CSS Sprites

After going through the whole process of trying to speed up my site, it seems that the remaining item on all the checklists (Page Speed, YSlow, etc.) is getting CSS Sprites.

I understand the concept, but really have no clue on how to go about it.  Has anyone gone this far in increasing page speed before?  Is it really needed?  How do I go about getting it done?

Thanks!

Hey man, I did this for a few spots on our site. I'm not really sure it's worth the effort, but basically anywhere that you use a series of graphics for links, you replace them with a single image and use CSS to properly style any text or hyperlinks over the image so that it all still looks like multiple element.

A good example of where you can best do this is where most blogs have Facebook/twitter/rss chicklets. If you're good with photoshop or another image editing program, it's not difficult. The hardest part is getting the CSS styling right.

I think i found a tutorial on google for this…

Robert if you have a number of images in your site, this may help.  Again, the speed boost isn't very significant as nerdwallet points out.  It involves some amount of work though.

Have you tried caching plugins like Total Cache?

Yes, I have have W3 and WP-Super Cache and like what they do together.  I think to get the final boost may be to get a CDN like Amazon to host the images or something, but I need to make some more consistent revenue first!
