Disappointed about Alexa Ranking

My Alexa went from 10M to 1.3M in a little over two weeks. In the last few days, the decline has been steady and slow. However, after several days of decline, it went up slight by about 1000 points. I'm still at 1.3M, but slightly higher. I'm baffled and disappointed. I'm trying to get it below 1M within the next couple of weeks.

I've been consistently writing posts, commenting on other sites, and participating in the Yakezie forum. But yet, it went up. Is this natural?

Also, I've gotten about 4 new nofollow links from other sites. Could that be the reason?

Because Alexa rankings have a ton to do with the Alexa toolbar, your results are going to vary.

My Alexa ranking started cranking when I quit watching. For awhile mine stalled (around 200k) and now I see today that it's dropping steadily again the last few weeks. I rarely pay attention to it anymore because it just drove me nuts.

Anthony,

I check these forums pretty often and it seems like you are OBSESSED with metrics.  I will be as honest and possible…you are going to quit blogging unless you change your views.  It is not a maybe, it is a certainty. PR, Alexa, Quantcast, etc., yes they are important but when you only have a 60 posts (at 4 a week we are talking about 15 weeks of blogging) they don't mean shit.

Just keep plugging along and ignore the noise for a bit!

P.S. can we laugh together about the irony that your latest post is about ignoring negative voices…

I agree with Evan – it's one of those "if you build it, they will come" things.  You're building it, but you haven't built it yet.  Slow and steady definitely wins the race.  There really is no rush.  I know there's a "6 month" element to the challenge, which seems daunting, but I promise that if you focus on the stats your blog will suffer and then your stats will suffer.  It's backwards.  Focus on your blog and networking and people will come.  Keep the right focus and 200,000 in 6 months will not be a problem.  Keep your head up and ignore those negative voices!

How about you check once a week?  Also remember that Alexa is a comparison tool, so it's possible for traffic to increase but ranking get worse (if others around had larger spikes).

Don't be too concerned about it. It will fluctuate, and 1000 is really not much. It will also drop a lot slower once you get out of the millions – and even slower when you get under 300K or so. That's ok. It's a process, and really, Alexa doesn't matter. It's just a fun metric.

I think it's a bit cruel for you to suggest that I seem obsessed with metrics when all I'm trying to do is make sense out of what I don't understand. I've seen others on the forum ask blogging and metrics questions, and it never seemed to be a problem. I've done my best to be as supportive as I can on the forum, as well as ask questions about certain things that bugged me regarding my blog. I didn't come here to be ridiculed by you or anyone else, and I won't tolerate this type of mean-spirited behavior from you. And, this not about negative voices…. It's about seeking valuable information, so that I can get better. How dare you tell what I will end up doing when you don't even know me. If my questions bug you to the point where you feel like you have to be nasty, then do me a big, big, big favor and "step the f… off". How's that for irony? Would you like to share a laugh about that?

I know I haven't built it yet. I understand slow and steady. I was a bit perplexed, and needed a little clarification as well as a little bit of reassurance and encouragement. I know that there's no rush. I'm not rushing anything. I'm just doing the work. I look at my stats just to see how things are moving. And if something seems a bit out of place to me that I don't understand, then I feel that I should ask. This is not about focusing too much on my stats. If anything, I try to focus more on my content. What has this got to do with negative voices? Gee whiz!

In any case, thank you for your input, and I'll take your suggestions to heart.

You're definitely doing great, Anthony, so don't get discouraged (also, I didn't intend to suggest that you were doing anything wrong, I really enjoy interacting with you here and around the blogosphere.)  Definitely keep up the good work and touch base often!

While I can't say for sure, I think what Evan is trying to say is that blogging is a marathon, not a sprint. He is pretty consistent with that bit of wisdom (to everyone) and I think it helps a lot of new bloggers hear it at the start. I know that I appreciated his voice of concern when I was staring out. The truth is that many people want to have immediate success when they blog (myself included), but it just doesn't work that way.

If you are really concerned with Alexa, just keep doing what you are doing. The key to getting a low alexa is interacting with other bloggers (especially commenting) and writing great content. Eventually the numbers will catch up with your investment. It takes a while to let people you are here and worth visiting.

I bet you will continue to see a steady decrease in your alexa if you stay actively involved. Good luck! Let me know if you need anything.

Corey

Anthony, I don't think Evan (or I) were trying to be negative or anything like that and, if anything, we were just trying to suggest that you've done nothing wrong and stats are really tough to understand (I definitely don't get them all).  I don't want to put words in his mouth but he's definitely been very helpful to a bunch of people and think he was just trying to help, give you a pep talk.

Also, my reference to the post was also tongue in cheek, suggesting that, while useful to some extent, it's really just noise and not very important yet.  I hope I didn't offend you; I certainly was just trying to give somewhat of an Alexa is a bit random because it involves the toolbar as well as both your traffic and that of other blogs.  The only thing you can control is the content and your interaction, both of which you're ROCKING!

Thank you ever so kindly, Nick. I really appreciate your generosity and kind words of encouragement. Don't worry. I know that you're intentions were good. Likewise, I enjoy interacting with you as well. You've been really helpful to me, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. I will keep it going, and touch base very often.

Glencap, it takes a long time to see results on a blog. Many people expect instant results after a few weeks or even after a few months. This isn't realistic, you need to be in this game for at least a year before you see significant results.

Just keep plugging away man! Quit worrying about checking your stats regularly, focus on content and quality, and just do it! The rankings will come in time. Smile

Cheers

I would suggest spending a weekend just reading the boards going back a month or three.  All of your questions are almost guaranteed to be answered in a thread that someone else had already asked.  The questions you have are questions that everyone has at one point early on in their blogging endeavors.

Now, for my personal insights.  Alexa shouldn't matter to you very much right now.  You need to be concentrating on building a solid reader base that will interact with you.  The fact you visit other sites and comment, and come into the forums to post, doesn't automatically equate to people coming to your site.  You need to make it worth their time to read your posts and to comment on them.  This isn't for everyone.  I care about engagement on my site, on facebook (sort of), google plus and twitter. The number of visitors, Alexa rank, subscribers aren't worth a damn to me if I am only talking to myself with no one responding.

Shift your focus away from the numbers for now, write consistently good material, interact with others all over the place, worry about community. Everything else will fall into place if you do all those things.

Oh, and please make sure to go back and read all of the board posts for a few months so you can self-answer as many possible concerns your may have.  There is a large amount of information that has already been passed on.  Trust me, I know first hand!

@Glencap – MJTM was anything but mean spirited.  He spoke matter of fact, about reality and from years of experience.  Your reaction to his message is over the top.  Why?  MJTM is dead on – if you (you being anyone) obsess/worry/dwell on statistics (or for that matter monetization, traffic or immediate success) you are setting yourself up for failure when it comes to blogging.

Our site alexa rank has RISEN 20k in the last 2 months. – almost 30%.  Do I care? Nope.  Why?  It means fewer bloggers who have one specific toolbar installed in their browser are visiting our site.  Do I care? Nope.  Why?  Our SE traffic has more than doubled during this same period.  Our total unique visits almost doubled.  We get more comments now than we did @ 50k Alexa.  Yes, I track stats – once a month.  Dwelling on metrics/rankings/and-so-on will drive a person crazy to the point that actually growing their site becomes secondary.

Didn't mean anything mean spirited…just calling them like I see it.  Am I wrong have you not asked 7 different metric questions in 132 posts here?

But your response has pushed me towards the I don't give a shit end of the spectrum.  Good luck, I am sure others here will help you out.

Great! Call it as you see it. That's your business. I don't know whether you're right or wrong about the number of metrics questions that I've asked thus far, and quite frankly I don't even see where it matters. My point is that asking 2, 50, 132, 232 does not automatically equate with my being obsessed with the metrics. A bit too inquisitive or concerned, maybe! But obsessed? Gee, thanks! I don't just think it was just my response that pushed you towards the "I don't give a shit end of the spectrum" as you so eloquently put it. It's your attitude. Thanks for your help anyway, and good luck to you as well. End of discussion!!

Personally, I care about the alexa ranking primarily for purposes of motivation and focus.  Knowing that mostly bloggers have the toolbar installed, the actual number doesn't mean so much, but I certainly do get a kick out of the number improving, regardless of what it came from.  I use it for competitive purposes, and as one indication that I'm doing things right.  At this point, with a blog less than 2 months old, it could simply be that each post I add subtracts from the alexa rating.  Plus, if you don't know how alexa relates to readers, visitors, pageviews, etc. (and I certainly don't) it is a fairly meaningless metric on it's own.

Use it as self motivation, make a game of it.  Like seeing how many times you can bounce a ball, and then try and beat the record.
