I understand the basics of Follow and No follow for links. However, I was wondering about comments.
I just added a 'dofollow' plugin to my site that treats comments as do follow, as opposed to the default nofollow.
What is the negative to doing this? I want my readers/commenters to get all the credit they can!
So, just know that if you comment on my site, you will be followed (but not stalked…) :)

I have the plugin installed as well. One of the negative things that I have noticed is a lot more spam. There are actually people who will find my site by searching "this site uses do follow – taxes" (or whatever keyword they are targeting). I can't say how much spam is because of the plugin and how much is because of the increased traffic, but you'll probably see more.
I also have a link called "keyword luv", which allows a person to link to their site using a dofollow keyword so the name in the comment would look like, "Kris @ Best Personal Finance Site EVER"! So keep that in mind the next time you comment on my site. But that bring in more spam as well.

I believe that the biggest problem with dofollow links is that you transfer page rank.

I think I heard that Pagerank would not leak so much from comments now hence the weight that people gain from comment links is far less.
However I don't think it's totally bad to leak pagerank, it shows a more natural view to Google if you leak pagerank through posts to related sites.

Spam will definitely increase as a result of the dofollow plugin.

Kris, as a do follow blogger, here's my experience. As KNS points out, you'll be battling more spam. But I don't think it negatively impacts your blog as long as your are on top of your spam. I do want my commentators to get link juice at the same time I don't want to entertain spammers.
But with Google de-emphasizing PR, not sure how this is going.

Leaking pagerank is a debated concept in the SEO world. It may happen, but probably not much.

The biggest downside is that you will attract more spammers. Google averages out your page rank across all your links regardless of link type; the other site simply doesn't get link juice if it's a "nofollow" link.
What I am doing right now is a "dofollow" top 10 list. My comments are standard.

Does mozRank take consideration for "dofollow" versus "nofollow"? I don't think that it makes a distinction but counts total links. Curious about it for those of you tha tmight know mozRank a little better than I do.

I consider a "follow" link a premium that I give out only to deserving websites and advertisers. Why should I give them away for free?
