There are rumours I often hear that blog directories do not help sites any more. However this is not strictly true. Poor directories that just allow any site to be listed, are no longer helpful. Quality directories that only include quality sites DO help, and I have proof at my post here – http://www.affiliatehelp.info/…..rectories/
What do you guys think? Do you submit to directories? Have they helped you?

Anything I'm not sure of I test on niche sites.
I have one that gets the brunt of the experiments and has seen no negative effects from submitting it to 30k directories at one time.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you think these submissions actively helped your site?

My current thinking after the latest Penguin update is that directory links will be more helpful going forward because they are branded links instead of anchor text focus. I suspect Penguin greatly penalized sites with too much unnatural anchor text.

Google has apparently deindexed a bunch of directories this week, so they may be getting devalued as a whole.

It's hard to measure because I also built backlinks other ways, but I haven't seen any negative effects.

I've also heard that a bunch of the directories have shut down because they no longer have value. Some are being bought out by bigger ones, but overall I never really saw anything substantially rewarding about being listed except for crappy pingbacks and scrapers (although I'm sure it wasn't all due to the directories).

I didn't know a load of directories had recently been deindexed. Presumably they are the type that will accept any site no matter what? No, theres probably no value in being listed in any crappy site, directory or not!

With all the de-indexing and de-valuing, it doesn't seem worth it to me…

So any good suggestions for worthwhile directories? I finally got listed on Technocrati and my spam rate shot up!
I've tried DMOZ, but heard its rare to get added now.

I submitted my blog to a whole bunch of the free blog directories when I started my site but I have gotten maybe one referral from any of them. I do not think they are worth it anymore.

Most of the directories aren't worth the trouble to begin with. If you look at your Google Analytics you can see where referrals are coming from, and from what I've seen I don't think anything has come from any directories.
Brent–Technorati is good if you are posting consistently, getting mentions elsewhere and getting to the Top 100 sections. Once you get there, you will see some traffic, but not all that much–much of the interest is in technology and entertainment sections as opposed to finance.

Eric,
Good advice. I'm not going to sweat the directories now, too many other fish to fry.

I never posted to any directories at all. The only one we registered for was Technorati back when the blog was started. I ignored it when 500 of the top Finance or Small Business blogs were all about social media.
I don't think it has hurt us. We get requests for advertisement from random companies about 4X a month but we also get partnership discussions with companies like Virgin and Experian. If we had chosen to monetize, it would have been for five -six figure annual contracts.
I would say to figure out your business model and gear your marketing efforts towards that.

I have to a couple in the past, but haven't seen any return on them. I'm more interested in focusing on writing and growing organically. Occasionally I get Stumbled or something and see a spike, but that's short-lived stuff.
