Hey everyone, happy Friday!
I've been wondering this for while, do you think blogging anonymously holds me and/or my blog back at all? I've thought about not blogging anonymously, and I hope to do this eventually, but I just can't decide. I would love to share actual pictures of me on my blog and share more personal things about myself, but then I always rethink it and delete the post.
What do you think?
Any other comments on anonymous blogging?

Well, I'm bias because I'm anonymous and I definitely don't think it holds us back. But that's just me. I even wrote a post about this yesterday (shameless promotion: http://add-vodka.com/the-downs…..onymously/). I'd be happy to share my real name with anyone that emailed me to ask, but I don't think people need to be googling me and finding WLGYL.

I blogged with total anonymity for the first 2 months (with the exception of my picture). Nobody is going to find me via a random picture on a random blog that will still very unknown at the time, and probably still is lol.
But I am now public with my last name, I can easily be google'd, and my friends and family are now becoming more aware of what I do. I am proud of it.
So no, I dont think it hurts you, but if being open doesnt hurt you then why not disclose more…it may build relationships and help more! if anything, once your friends, family, acquaintances find out, your direct hits will start going up.

Shameless promotion here too, I posted (http://www.makingsenseofcents……other.html) here about why I blog anonymously

We were anonymous for a full year.
The only thing that will hold you back is working with media outlets (newspapers, tv, magazines) as they insist on putting a name to the source of information they are presenting to their readers. "Sustainable PF" won't cut it.
I've also found that dealing with advertisers is easier as they prefer to build a personal relationship and a "handle" does not permit that.

I share my first name and photo but I hesitate to share my last name because my first + last name is pretty much the only one on Google. If people knew my last name, they could also find me easier via phone book/house records and stuff and most people are normal but there are weirdos out there!

I share my real name, I just don't have a ton of pictures of myself floating around my my blog. So I'm not entirely anonymous I guess.

Aloysa is my blogger's name and I am not planning on disclosing my real name any time soon. Some of PF bloggers know it already (through friendships and working relationships) but it doesn't bother me. Only one friend knows about my blog and he doesn't read it. :) My mom knows and she doesn't read it. What I don't want is people at work finding out about it. Because I know they will read it! lol I am very honest about my life on my blog. I don't want my colleagues to know about my problems and gossip about it. Especially those who I manage. As far as media goes, somehow I don't really worry about it. I cross this bridge if I ever reach it.

I obviously should have thought through this decision more before attaching my name to my blog. I think in a lot of ways it does limit how open you might be. When you're anonymous, it's a lot easier to just talk about anything in your life without any consequences.

I'm probably weird, but someone being anonymous doesn't bother me at all. I read for the content (unless my reading is primarily for networking sake). It's only afterwards that I try to figure out who is behind it.

I started out semi-anonymous – no one knew more than my first name until I went to FINCON last year. Then it seemed kind of silly to hide who I was since so many people knew. Plus, as SPF mentioned, it's hard to work with bigger websites and media outlets when they don't have a real name.
I don't advertise my full name, but it's out there. It does make it hard to blog about personal things like income, but at the same time I don't worry too much about it. I just ask myself, "Would my grandfather disown me if he read this?" If not, up it goes.

I agree with that. When I started my blog, it was for the specific purpose of marketing myself to employers, but I found myself holding back from a lot of things I wanted to say. I have considered starting another blog so I can write anonymously on the subject.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

I'll be sharing my name at some point, but my partner, like Aloysa, can't have it come out at work, so theOtherGuy will remain "theOtherGuy."
I don't think it hurts our blog, because "anonymous" doesn't mean "sanitized" to me. I still blog about things we do at home, what my kids are up to and how I live. I believe if I'm "real" in my blog, then the fact that I use "AverageJoe" as my blogging name quickly will become irrelevant. I work hard to provide quality links to sources that verify my facts. This is to keep credibility with my readers. I guess what I'm saying is that I work hard to develop my personality online to counter my "anonymous" identity.

I think this makes a lot of sense.
I blog anonymously because I don't want a future or present employer to find my website about trying to transcend my employment :) Whenever I don't need employment anymore, I'll start using my name.

It can work, however. Just look at J.$ If anybody knows his real name, they haven't admitted it. It was only last year before any images of him surfaced. And he's still able to make 6 figures from advertising. When he was in our local paper, he was sited as J.$ and explained his anonymity.

I am far from anonymous but it's the nature of what I do.

Really interesting discussion here – I think AverageJoe says it well. If I can connect with the writer, the fact I don't know their name means nothing. There is a difference between anonymity and personality. We can engage with personality when people write honestly – let's face it, names are generic anyway!

What's funny about J$ is I hung out with him for quite a while at Blogworld LA and it was only like a week or so ago that I realized that I never knew his name. Calling him J just seemed to work ;)
For me being anonymous did hold me back because I felt like I couldn't be myself. I'm a very open person normally and not being able to say things that would have identified me was restrictive.

I think blogging anonymously holds you back because if your story is going to mention something in your town or something that you have particular involvment with you have to think twice about running the story for fear of someone finding out. I am anonymous now, Im sure i will be revealed in the future. Maybe a contest or something in the future when ive made it big…lol…

My domain name is my real name lol.
I believe in putting a personal touch in the blog. This gives you the power of authenticity. Blogs are read by humans after all.
