Don't Kick Me Out of Yakezie: But I've Posted About how in my opinion Alexa Rankings are a Ridiculous Way to Judge a Blog's Success

Ah, I guess I interpreted your statement incorrectly about the challenge and participating in it.

Glad you're sticking around and sharing your experience.

In my opinion, there is definitely a fine line between "selflessly helping others" and performing certain actions in order to increase your Alexa rankings. That's not an accusation or anything, but just a statement.

Plus, the more you try to "game" the Alexa system, the less accurate it becomes as an overall ranking system of your blog's popularity on the Internet, which kind of decreases it's value as a measurement tool, unless you're just comparing the Alexa rankings among Yakezie blogs I suppose, but then I don't think we're competing against each other.

When I took the challenge (and I feel like I'm still challenging by the way, although I do have my membership card), I always thought of the Alexa ranking as being a general way for Yakezie members to track the overall progress of their blogs, but not necessarily that the challenge was just about increasing our Alexa rankings.

It's definitely exciting to watch, and I remember how excited I would get going from 8 million to 7.5 million, but I don't think the success of any one blogger in the network would be based on their Alexa ranking, or that higher Alexa ranking member blogs would be deemed more successful members.

I mean, the more power to you if increasing Alexa ranking is one of your goals (beyond just reaching that goal to become a full-fledged Yakezie member), and I'd like to increase mine as well, but I think it's overall a small part of what Yakezie is about, at least for me.

Heated to say the least. Haha no Im just kidding around.

I like Alexa because it shows me that Yakezie members are viewing my site. However, I become more elated each day when I see that my search engine viewers has increased.

I think the "challenge" of the Yakezie Challenge–in terms of the Alexa ranking–is really a challenge against yourself.  I think everyone understands that part of it and can agree on that.  It's like solitaire.  Of course I can't really say for sure, Yakezie has been around a lot longer than any of my sites, including my past site, Broke Professionals.

Being fairly new to Yakezie the only thing I can say is that I have yet to see a bad person who is apart of this group.  I probably should have left the Alexa topic alone.   We do not all have to be in agreement on anything, and particularly not a somewhat minor issue such as personal opinions about Alexa rankings.

I didn't read the post yet, but my own opinion is that Alexa is what it is. It's a number but don't make it a holy grail. ;) It's fun to compete with each other so that we all improve our rankings but we have to keep things in perspective, too.

REad your post when it came out and liked it. I try to stay impartial regarding rankings and do what I need to do to grow my site. All rankings fluctuate. My self worth isn't determined by Alexa or Google Analytics etc.

Alexa indeed is a horrible way to judge the success of a blog. It can somewhat judge the success of a blog amongst webmasters, but that's pretty much it. Just get a few computers with the toolbar installed, visit your site daily and you'll see how easily you can get your number to drop.

I think that traffic is the most important ranking. if you have a blog with traffic, you can monetize it.

I find this topic so intriguing since I began blogging on January 19.
I was far more concerned about the layout and design of my blog, my
target audience, and how to work Wordpress and Pagelines. I had no idea
about rankings…although I knew they mattered.

I joined the Yakezie challenge on 4/13. My rankings are nothing to
write home about, but as a newbie, I am enjoying my progress. I am also
enjoying the new blogs I have found and a few tips that I didn’t know…I
even sent my husband a link or two.

If I can help one person make a better financial decision, save
money, find a better value while looking more elegant, then I feel as
though I have accomplished my mission.

I must say that I do LOVE a challenge. I will work to get those rankings down.

Wow, a lively debate! As I'm on my phone, I can't type much so I hope folks can read my original post that Money Reasons highlighted about my views on Alexa.

One of my key definitions of happiness is simply the word "progress.". Alexa is a simple pain free way of measuring progress. It's not perfect, but it's fun and there is a correlation.

My biggest fear with the Network is what happens after Money starts getting involved. As soon as money is on the line, things start breaking down, and hopefully, through a six month challenge of getting to know each other and helping each other out, money won't be as big of an issue (pls read How To Build A Sustainable Organization). If one can't complete the minimum 6 month period, it makes things more difficult to conduct business in the future.

I'm also unsure why you'd sell your site after only several months FreelancePF, while in the challenge since you started another site? It would be one thing if you were burnt out and just quit, but that's not the case. Pls help me understand why you didn't finish the 6 month Challenge with Broke Professionals? There seems to be some frustration from your forum posts. Is it sellers remorse like the Winkelvoss twins, frustration at particular people, etc? Help us understand better!

Thx,

Sam

Regards,

Sam
