So, I finally signed up for feedburner to manage my email subscriptions, and I want everyone's thoughts on putting up a feed counter. Since I just switched over, I only have 4 feed subscribers.
My question is; Should I display my feed counter in hopes of getting more pity subscribers to help me out, or should I wait until I have like 50+ to show the counter to induce the bandwagon effect and have people join "because everyone else is doing it."
I'm leaning toward the pity subscribers, because people love to root for the underdog….I think…
What do YOU think?

I'd throw it up there even with a small number, but more so that it gives people another place to click to subscribe.

I personally would wait. While there is nothing to be ashamed of, you need to convince people that it's worth subscribing to. Showing 4 current subscribers isn't going to display a lot of confidence in your readers.
Going off of one thing from FinCon, don't forget that your readers aren't other PF bloggers. Well, as many of us know, it's a part of them, but that shouldn't be our focus.

This is very true. And honestly, most other bloggers are going to subscribe to RSS, not email, so the non-blogger readers would be turned off by a low number. This is definitely a category I want to grow, and it seems to be the toughest one to get ramped up. I think I'll wait until I hit 50 to post the counter.
Do you think that's a good rule of thumb for social counters? 50+ subscribers before showing the button?

I do have a few places already, so i'm not worried about access, but more about the perception.

I get discouraged about the ups and downs of subscriptions, so I actually disabled the counter on TaxesandStuff. Since I couldn't get rid of it on WhatMommyDoes without messing with code (my template is NOT user friendly), I manually set it to 1 billion. mwuhahahahaha
But, to answer your question – I would set your "show" point somewhere you'd be comfortable showing it to others AND be okay if it dipped a little. If you really want 50, and your subscribers drop down to 45, will you still want it to show? Just a thought…

Haha, that's awesome. You have a mighty popular website there :)
Yea, I think 50 is a good number, because it shows that it's not just my family subscribing because I told them to on facebook (..ummm…i totally didn't do that…). The ups and downs might be a bummer sometimes, but if it grows, it's also very encouraging.
So, let's put it to a vote. If there are no naysayers, I will "show" my feed counters at 50 subscriptions +. Cast your vote, or forever be silent (about this particular matter).

I personally don't use it on mine, maybe in the near future when I have at least 1,000 hehe
Don't mean to hijack but does anyone know how to create a second feedburner on your account? Or do you have to create another email account?

I'm with Corey on this one. I waited awhile before I put mine up…I could have probably done it sooner but I didn't display mine until I had 350 people.

It's funny, I had the same question/thoughts you do. I see bloggers have feed counter things and I consider doing it, but I only have 29 subscribers, so it feels a little embarrassing and I wouldnt' want readers to think its' not worth subscribing too. Especially when I see some blogs with counts into the thousands!
So I was going to wait until I got a fatter number so that people might feel that bandwagon effect you mentioned. I was going to wait until 75 or 100. I tell ya, my alexa ranking has been dropping a whole lost faster than I've gotten subscribers! :-)

Aaron man, I had a hard enough time creating just one feedburner and now you want two? Lol, good luck

I would put it up! Ever since I put mine up, it's been skyrocketing it seems like.

I just created an article site and want a separate feed for it but I'm not sure how to do it right.

Ok, so that's one vote for 50, one vote for 1,000, one vote for 350, one vote for 75-100, and one vote for now…
It's a 5-way tie so far. Anyone want to break the tie?

LOL I said 50 because it sounds like that's what you wanted in the first place. I don't think there's a wrong answer.

I'm in the hundreds and don't put the counter up. I don't see it as a huge value ad for my readers, though if I were in the thousands I might throw it up.

I would suggest waiting until you consistently have triple digits (at the very least). Social proof is only valuable when it's proving something positive. With a low ticker count, you're only proving how few subscribers you have.

Imagine a late night commercial… What would you think if the salesperson said tens of people use this very item?
Wait until you have at least triple digits. And give it some time before you check your numbers. I used to check Feedburner every day. Huge waste of time.

The Feed Counter is a great use of Social and Group Dynamics concepts. The higher the number, the higher the perception of trust.
But I'd wait until you have at least 25 or more. Of course, I'm likely stuck on that number because it was drilled into my brain that a sample size is not significant until you have at least 25 people.
